"Les personnes de plus de 60 ans représentent aujourd'hui 23% de la population, contre seulement 17% en 1960 (source : CNSA, 2015). Parmi eux, près de 600 000 vivent en maison de retraite ou Établissement d'hébergement des personnes âgées dépendantes (EHPAD). Nous nous intéressons, dans cette étude, au choix d'hébergement des personnes âgées. Nous nous appuyons sur le constat que ni le coût ni la dépendance, ne peuvent justifier, à eux seuls, ce choix. Cette étude s'appuie sur l'analyse seconde des données de l'enquête Handicap-Santé volet ménage (2008) et volet institution (2009). Nous avons utilisé un modèle logistique pour démontrer le coût d'hébergement, de la dépendance physique et psychique et des caractéristiques socioéconomiques de l'individu sur la probabiblité de résider en EHPAD. Nos résultats suggèrent d'un part que l'âge, l'absence du réseau social, et la dépendance augmentent la probabilité de vivre en institution. D'autre part, le fait d'avoir des enfants, d'avoir un réseau social, d'avoir fait des études supérieures diminuent cette probabilité. En revanche, le coût de vivre en institution a un effet indéterminé sur le choix de la domiciliation. Enfin, l'analyse des déterminants en fonction du niveau de dépendance permet de mettre en exergue un rôle différent des facteurs socio-économiques suivant le niveau de dépendance de l'individu.
