On sait maintenant que presque toutes les étoiles, qu’elles soient semblables au Soleil, plus grosses ou plus petites, doivent être entourées d’un ou plusieurs de ces astres. Nous connaissons des systèmes comportant jusqu’à 7 planètes, qui sont tous très différents de notre Système solaire. Celui-ci est-il une exception, et la vie qu’il abrite est-elle elle-même l’exception ? Nous n’en savons encore rien. En attendant, nous ne pouvons que nous étonner et nous émerveiller sur l’infinie variété des exoplanètes. Il y en a de toutes tailles, certaines bien plus grosses que Jupiter, et de toutes natures : des solides, des gazeuses, d’autres peut-être recouvertes d’océans comme la nôtre. Certaines sont si proches de l’étoile autour de laquelle elles gravitent que la température y est infernale, d’autres en sont suffisamment distantes pour qu’une température clémente puisse peut-être y permettre la vie, d’autres sont plus lointaines et très froides. Il existe aussi de nombreuses planètes isolées qui ont été éjectées de systèmes planétaires en formation, ou même formées loin de toute étoile. Ce petit livre explique de la façon la plus simple possible comment les exoplanètes ont été découvertes, ce qu’on sait de leur taille, de leur densité, de leur température et de leur atmosphère, quand il y en a une. Il décrit aussi comment elles sont nées et comment les systèmes planétaires, dont le nôtre, ont pu évoluer au cours du temps. La recherche d’une vie éventuelle sur les planètes qui entourent le Soleil et sur les autres planètes est enfin abordée. Il subsiste bien plus d’inconnues que de certitudes dans l’étude des exoplanètes, qui pour l’instant ne sont encore pour nous que des points lumineux dans le ciel : l’ère des surprises n’a fait que commencer.
