Nous tenterons de répondre, par notre étude, à la question : comment les traductologues contemporains théorisent-ils la traduction ? Ce qui nous intéresse le plus, c’est la façon dont ils pensent la traduction : l’angle choisi pour réfléchir en ce domaine, le terrain d’observation, les questions qu’ils ont tenté de traiter et l’évolution de chaque théorie. Nous aimerions situer ce travail dans le cadre des études méta-théoriques. Nous espérons qu’il contribuera à révéler les enjeux de théoriser la traduction à l’époque contemporaine. Nous tenterons d’éclairer les enjeux de théoriser la traduction chez trois traductologues français (Danica Seleskovitch, Antoine Berman et Jean-René Ladmiral). L’expérience en tant que base de réfléchir sur la traduction joue toujours un rôle important dans la démarche de théoriser la traduction et constitue un enjeu étroitement lié à l’épistémologie de la traductologie, mais l’expérience traductive ne mène pas les traductologues contemporains aux mêmes chemins de réfléchir sur la traduction. L’à-traduire (ce que le traducteur doit transmettre du texte-source au texte-cible) reste un sujet central dans les études de la traduction. Définir et redéfinir l’à-traduire constitue un « moteur » le plus puissant de théoriser la traduction. Les réflexions sur ce sujet problématisent le sens, l’effet, le littéralisme et l’éthique en traductologie contemporaine. En tant qu’espace de réflexivité, la traductologie contemporaine est bien marquée par la tradition philosophique.
