Stigmochelys pardalis, or leopard tortoises, are among the world's most intriguing reptiles. This chapter will examine the history of leopard tortoises, provide a general description of the species, and discuss the reasons why they are wonderful companions. Evolution and History The ancient age, millions of years ago, is when the history of leopard tortoises begins. According to fossil records, tortoises that resembled the leopard tortoise of today lived between 5 and 23 million years ago, during the Miocene period. These extinct tortoises underwent diversification and evolution throughout time, giving rise to many species, including Stigmochelys pardalis. Overview of Species The Testudinidae family, which contains more than 50 species of tortoises worldwide, is where leopard tortoises are classified. They got their name because of their unusually patterned shell, which resembles a leopard's rosettes. The fourth-largest species of tortoise worldwide, leopard tortoises grow to a maximum length of 18 to 24 inches and a maximum weight of 40 to 100 pounds as adults. They may make fantastic pets for committed keepers and are recognized for having a rather calm disposition despite their size.
