Excerpt from Leonardo Da Vinci They suggest some of the difficulties attendant upon the attempt to write about him. He was the most versatile genius of the age of the Renaissance, and the more genius approaches the uni versal, the less can it be seen save in section. If Leonardo had never either painted or worked in sculpture, his achievements in the more mechanical arts, his inventions, his projects, and'the plans he carried out in canalization and engineering, would have received notice more befitting their magnitude. Excerpt from The Admirable Painter: A Study of Leonardo Da Vinci I have altered this story so as to hide the painter's identity, but otherwise it is true; for if an artist is to live, he must sell his pictures; if he is to sell his pictures, he must paint what the public demands. Book Description
Excerpt from Leonardo Da Vinci and His Works: Consisting of a Life of Leonardo Da Vinci My share in the following work has been confined to the biographical sketch with which it opens. In its compilation I have taken advantage of most of the later and many of the earlier authorities. I have endeavoured to omit nothing of interest in regard to Leonardo's life, but I have carefully abstained from any attempt at criticism of his works or genius. The essay on Leonardo da Vinci in Science and Literature that follows my sketch is from the far abler pen of Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
For many people the greatest artist, and the quintessential Renaissance man, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was a painter, architect, theatre designer, engineer, sculptor, anatomist, geometer, naturalist, poet and musician. His Last Supper in Milan has been called the greatest painting in Western art. Illegitimate, left-handed and homosexual, Leonardo never made a straightforward career. But from his earliest apprenticeship with the Florentine painter and sculptor Andrea Verrochio, his astonishing gifts were recognised. His life led him from Florence to militaristic Milan and back, to Rome and eventually to France, where he died in the arms of the King, Francis I. As one of the greatest exponents of painting of his time, Leonardo was celebrated by his fellow Florentine Vasari (who was nevertheless responsible for covering over the great fresco of the Battle of Anghiari with his own painting). Vasari's carefully researched life of Leonardo remains one of the main sources of our knowledge, and is printed here together with the three other early biographies, and the major account by his French editor Du Fresne. Personal reminiscences by the novelist Bandello, and humanist Saba di Castiglione, round out the picture, and for the first time the extremely revealing imagined dialogue between Leonardo and the Greek sculptor Phidias, by the painter and theorist Lomazzo, is published in English. An introduction by the scholar Charles Robertson places these writings and the career of Leonardo in context. Approximately 50 pages of colour illustrations, including the major paintings and many of the astonishing drawings, give a rich overview of Leonardo's work and mind.

Book Description
Excerpt from Leonardo Da Vinci: The Florentine Years of Leonardo Verrocchio If the art-loving public could learn to look more materially at art, would turn its attention to the peculiar style, technique and execution of each particular work, and thus teach itself to judge artistic quality, much would be gained. The public would not then be so frequently the victim of trickery and advertisement as it now is; unskilled criticism would be banished, and the vulgar hunt for motives become less remunerative. Finally much fruitless discussion about art and morality would cease of its own accord as idle nonsense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
