Book Description
Excerpt from The Epistles of St. John: A Series of Lectures on Christian Ethics These Lectures were delivered to a small Class of Students in our Working Men's College at eight o'clock on Sunday mornings. I have not scrupled to tell this Class that I consider the question Whether there is a foundation for human morality - or Whether it is dependent upon the Opinions and fashions of different ages and countries, to be the question in which, as a body and as individuals, we are most interested; the question which most affects our studies and our daily lives. And I have told them also Where I find the answer to that question. But I have never used the plural pronoun; I have not assumed to speak except in my own person; and I should be very sorry if my colleagues - no one of whom has heard or read any of these Lectures-were held responsible for the sentiments contained in them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation of St. John: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes The application of this principle to the present case seems to follow naturally from what has already been said. St. John's work is a gospel: accordingly, like the other gospels, it will be made up of the the Acts and Sayings of Jesus. But its prologue has set forth a very special pur pose for the narrative the support of a theological position. In accordance with this we find, as a fact, that the 'acts of Jesus become in St. John's narrative 'signs, ' and the 'sayings' are all of the nature of 'witness.' From this point of view the work falls into natural divisions: seven incidents constitute the Earlier Signs and Witness of Jesus, seven more his Signs and Witness to the Jews; four divisions comprise the Signs and Witness among his own Disciples, and the three phases of the final Passion and Resurrection history may again be treated as Signs and Witness. Book Description
Excerpt from The Tests of Life: A Study of the First Epistle of St. John; Being the Kerr Lectures for 1909 AS only a portion of the contents of this volume could be orally delivered, I have not thought it necessary to adhere to either the form or the title of Lecture, but (with the consent of the Trustees) have assigned a separate Chapter to each principal topic dealt with. The method adopted in this exposition of the Epistle - that, namely, of grouping together the passages bearing upon a common theme - will be found, I trust, to have advantages which compensate in some measure for its disadvantages. That it has disadvantages, as compared with a continuous exposition, I am well aware. These, however, I have endeavoured to minimise, by supplying in the first chapter a specially full analysis of the Epistle, by careful indexing, and by making liberal use of cross-references. For the convenience of the reader, I have set down in the footnotes such exegetical details as seemed most necessary to explain or to establish the interpretation adopted; but where these involved lengthy or intricate discussion, they, along with all minuter points of exegesis, have been relegated to the Notes at the end of the volume. In these Notes the text of the Epistle is continuously followed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistles of St. John Dr. Liicke has given a German version of St. John's Epistles, along with his Commentary: the Translator perceived that justice could not be done to the Doctor's work, without translating this version: it is a version of such a Greek text as Dr. Liicke has deliberately adopted, and is also in conformity with the interpretation given in the Commentary. It is, in many instances, much more clear and perspicuous than the ver sion of the English Bible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Half-Hours With St. John's Epistles The similarity of the Epistle and the Gospel and their dissimilarity also will be seen when we study a passage in each containing the same fundamental truth: And this is life eternal, that they should know thee, the only true God, and him whoi'h thou didst send, even Jesus Christ. (john xvii. Here eternal life is the progressive recog nition of God through an increasing knowledge of His Son. The Gospel gives the historic revelation of God. But the Epistle goes further, And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding.
