Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Iron-Founding IN addition to the ordinary teaching in connection with the School of Metallurgy of the University of Birmingham, special short courses of lectures dealing with local industries have been arranged from time to time. These have been delivered in the evenings, and have attracted considerable audiences. In the spring of last year, for the third time since the department was established in Mason College in 1885, the subject chosen was Cast Iron. There was no intention to publish these lectures when they were originally prepared, but so many requests were received for copies, not only from the audience, but also from distant parts, that, somewhat reluctantly, publication was at length decided on. It is hoped by this means that those who attended the lectures will have an opportunity of going once more over the same ground, whilst the information will also be rendered available for a wider public. At the same time it is realized that the lectures will lose in publication the advantages of practical illustration at the lecture table. The form most suitable for popular explanation is also, at times, not that most fitted for a written statement. Hence, though the general scope of the lectures has been retained, Opportunity has been taken to introduce some alterations and additions, which will, it is hoped, make the work more permanently useful. Book Description
In this deeply learned book, poet and translator Robert Bly offers nothing less than a new vision of what it is to be a man.Bly's vision is based on his ongoing work with men and reflections on his own life. He addresses the devastating effects of remote fathers and mourns the disappearance of male initiation rites in our culture. Finding rich meaning in ancient stories and legends, Bly uses the Grimm fairy tale "Iron John," in which the narrator, or "Wild Man," guides a young man through eight stages of male growth, to remind us of archetypes long forgotten-images of vigorous masculinity, both protective and emotionally centered.Simultaneously poetic and down-to-earth, combining the grandeur of myth with the practical and often painful lessons of our own histories, Iron John is a rare work that will continue to guide and inspire men-and women-for years to come.
