Book Description
Focusing on Messiaen’s relation to history - both his own and the history he engendered - the Messiaen Perspectives volumes convey the growing understanding of his deep and varied interconnections with his cultural milieux. Messiaen Perspectives 1: Sources and Influences examines the genesis, sources and cultural pressures that shaped Messiaen’s music. Messiaen Perspectives 2: Techniques, Influence and Reception analyses Messiaen’s compositional approach and the repercussions of his music. While each book offers a coherent collection in itself, together these complementary volumes elucidate how powerfully Messiaen was embedded in his time and place, and how his music resonates ever more today. Messiaen Perspectives 1: Sources and Influences presents many new primary sources, including discussion of Messiaen’s birdsong cahiers, sketch and archival materials for his Prix de Rome entries and war-time Portique, along with performance practice insights and theological inspiration in works as diverse as Visions de l’Amen, Harawi, Timbres-durées and the organ Méditations. The volume places the composer within a broader historical and cultural framework than has previously been attempted, ranging from specific influences to more general contexts. As a centrepiece, the book includes an examination of the impact of one of the greatest influences upon Messiaen, Yvonne Loriod.

Book Description
Music Musique is a study of American and French composers active in the late 19th through early 20th centuries and the influence of jazz on their compositional styles. Starting with a look at the formation of American and French styles of composition, Meister discusses the jazz influence on American composers such as Ives, Copland, and Seeger, and their reception in France. She then takes a parallel look at the jazz influence on prominent French composers such as Ravel, Milhaud, and Messiaen, with a conclusion that briefly outlines post--World War II musical developments. Considerable attention is paid to the social and political worlds in which these artists lived and created. Of particular interest is the community of Afro-American jazz musicians who settled in Paris after World War I, and their influence on the likes of Ravel, Milhaud, Satie, and other artists with New Orleans--based styles. Meister also discusses the more famous coteries of American writers who lived and worked in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s. The stories of these two groups of Americans in Paris form a fascinating background to the main topic of the book. Music Musique is intended for amateurs and experts alike; it provides ideas about repertoire as well as information about compositions that are likely to be heard in performance. The emphasis of the text is always on the piano solo literature or other piano music -- song accompaniments, piano duets, or internal orchestral piano parts.

Book Description
The study analyses the current state of research on the synoptic problem and proves that the Synoptic Gospels were written in the Mark, Luke, Matthew order of direct literary dependence. Moreover, the work demonstrates that the Synoptic Gospels are results of systematic, sequential, hypertextual reworking of the contents of the Pauline letters. Accordingly, the so-called 'Q source' turns out to be an invention of nineteenth-century scholars with their Romantic hermeneutic presuppositions. Demonstration of the fact that the Gospels are not records of the activity of the historical Jesus but that they narratively illustrate the identity of Christ as it has been revealed in the person and life of Paul the Apostle will certainly have major consequences for the whole Christian theology.

Book Description

Book Description
EDITORIAL REVIEWS: Anna-Maria 101 Breathings' of Leonard Oprea is an outstanding novel, a human condition -symphony about the American family's misery, about the American society's failure today, in the 21st Century. In order to build his masterpiece, the artist composed 101 Breathings. Leonard Oprea created the Breathing, a new, an original type of essay in the whole world literature. The Breathing is a simple yet profound meditation on human condition, a meditation ended by a haiku. But - this haiku does not finish the meditation. In fact, it RE-opens this reflection to new questions and responses on human destiny. Thus, in this so genuine and different work there are short stories, poetry and essays, all perfectly mixed. Great wit and irony, and a deep sense of morality. And, even a special kind of suspense. You read an unforgettable odyssey. Leonard Oprea is an atemporal artist. His genius is of an iconoclast novelist, poet, essayist. His works are forever. His mission, God-is-Love. (Theophil Magus philosopher, novelist, poet and essayist) *** Leonard Oprea's dominant perspective is one of a cold objectivity, too little disposed to easy emotions, other than those hidden, profound feelings and questions. Themes are the life purpose, the ultimate springs of human actions... Intelligence, laconic sarcasm, humor, right targeting. How could we not be indebted to the author? He put his talent of storytelling to serve an exhortation which is nothing else than the health response in the presence of the morbid, the simplicity in the face of artificial, the man-loving of light against darkness and evil. (Nicolae Steinhardt philosopher, essayist and author) *** A novelist and essayist of Leonard Oprea's literary value does not need any introduction. From no one. (Valeriu Gherghel philosopher , essayist, literary critic and author) *** "NOTA BENE - in this unique book, 'Anna-Maria 101 Breathings', the reader will find, not by random there positioned, a few blank pages. These un-written pages are for the reader's commentaries, drawings and, why not? the reader's breathings. Thus, the reader will become a co-author of this sui-generis novel. Enjoy." (Leonard Oprea - the author) ***
