Book Description
Since the early part of the twentieth century, the use of integral equations has developed into a range of tools for the study of partial differential equations. This includes the use of single- and double-layer potentials to treat classical boundary value problems. The aim of this book is to give a self-contained presentation of an asymptotic theory for eigenvalue problems using layer potential techniques with applications in the fields of inverse problems, band gap structures, and optimal design, in particular the optimal design of photonic and phononic crystals. Throughout this book, it is shown how powerful the layer potentials techniques are for solving not only boundary value problems but also eigenvalue problems if they are combined with the elegant theory of Gohberg and Sigal on meromorphic operator-valued functions. The general approach in this book is developed in detail for eigenvalue problems for the Laplacian and the Lame system in the following two situations: one under variation of domains or boundary conditions and the other due to the presence of inclusions. The book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students working in the fields of partial differential equations, integral equations, and inverse problems. Researchers in engineering and physics may also find this book helpful.

Cohen-Macaulay Representations
Author: Graham J. Leuschke
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821875817
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 390
Book Description
This book is a comprehensive treatment of the representation theory of maximal Cohen-Macaulay (MCM) modules over local rings. This topic is at the intersection of commutative algebra, singularity theory, and representations of groups and algebras. Two introductory chapters treat the Krull-Remak-Schmidt Theorem on uniqueness of direct-sum decompositions and its failure for modules over local rings. Chapters 3-10 study the central problem of classifying the rings with only finitely many indecomposable MCM modules up to isomorphism, i.e., rings of finite CM type. The fundamental material--ADE/simple singularities, the double branched cover, Auslander-Reiten theory, and the Brauer-Thrall conjectures--is covered clearly and completely. Much of the content has never before appeared in book form. Examples include the representation theory of Artinian pairs and Burban-Drozd's related construction in dimension two, an introduction to the McKay correspondence from the point of view of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, Auslander-Buchweitz's MCM approximation theory, and a careful treatment of nonzero characteristic. The remaining seven chapters present results on bounded and countable CM type and on the representation theory of totally reflexive modules.

Geometric Approximation Algorithms
Author: Sariel Har-Peled
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821849115
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
Exact algorithms for dealing with geometric objects are complicated, hard to implement in practice, and slow. Over the last 20 years a theory of geometric approximation algorithms has emerged. These algorithms tend to be simple, fast, and more robust than their exact counterparts. This book is the first to cover geometric approximation algorithms in detail. In addition, more traditional computational geometry techniques that are widely used in developing such algorithms, like sampling, linear programming, etc., are also surveyed. Other topics covered include approximate nearest-neighbor search, shape approximation, coresets, dimension reduction, and embeddings. The topics covered are relatively independent and are supplemented by exercises. Close to 200 color figures are included in the text to illustrate proofs and ideas.

Mathematical Elasticity
Author: Philippe G. Ciarlet
Publisher: SIAM
ISBN: 1611976782
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 521
Book Description
The first book of a three-volume set, Three-Dimensional Elasticity covers the modeling and mathematical analysis of nonlinear three-dimensional elasticity. It includes the known existence theorems, either via the implicit function theorem or via the minimization of the energy (John Ball’s theory). An extended preface and extensive bibliography have been added to highlight the progress that has been made since the volume’s original publication. While each one of the three volumes is self-contained, together the Mathematical Elasticity set provides the only modern treatise on elasticity; introduces contemporary research on three-dimensional elasticity, the theory of plates, and the theory of shells; and contains proofs, detailed surveys of all mathematical prerequisites, and many problems for teaching and self-study. These classic textbooks are for advanced undergraduates, first-year graduate students, and researchers in pure or applied mathematics or continuum mechanics. They are appropriate for courses in mathematical elasticity, theory of plates and shells, continuum mechanics, computational mechanics, and applied mathematics in general.

The Calculus of Complex Functions
Author: William Johnston
Publisher: American Mathematical Society
ISBN: 1470465655
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
The book introduces complex analysis as a natural extension of the calculus of real-valued functions. The mechanism for doing so is the extension theorem, which states that any real analytic function extends to an analytic function defined in a region of the complex plane. The connection to real functions and calculus is then natural. The introduction to analytic functions feels intuitive and their fundamental properties are covered quickly. As a result, the book allows a surprisingly large coverage of the classical analysis topics of analytic and meromorphic functions, harmonic functions, contour integrals and series representations, conformal maps, and the Dirichlet problem. It also introduces several more advanced notions, including the Riemann hypothesis and operator theory, in a manner accessible to undergraduates. The last chapter describes bounded linear operators on Hilbert and Banach spaces, including the spectral theory of compact operators, in a way that also provides an excellent review of important topics in linear algebra and provides a pathway to undergraduate research topics in analysis. The book allows flexible use in a single semester, full-year, or capstone course in complex analysis. Prerequisites can range from only multivariate calculus to a transition course or to linear algebra or real analysis. There are over one thousand exercises of a variety of types and levels. Every chapter contains an essay describing a part of the history of the subject and at least one connected collection of exercises that together comprise a project-level exploration.

Elliptic Partial Differential Equations
Author: Vitaly Volpert
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3034605374
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 649
Book Description
The theory of elliptic partial differential equations has undergone an important development over the last two centuries. Together with electrostatics, heat and mass diffusion, hydrodynamics and many other applications, it has become one of the most richly enhanced fields of mathematics. This monograph undertakes a systematic presentation of the theory of general elliptic operators. The author discusses a priori estimates, normal solvability, the Fredholm property, the index of an elliptic operator, operators with a parameter, and nonlinear Fredholm operators. Particular attention is paid to elliptic problems in unbounded domains which have not yet been sufficiently treated in the literature and which require some special approaches. The book also contains an analysis of non-Fredholm operators and discrete operators as well as extensive historical and bibliographical comments . The selected topics and the author's level of discourse will make this book a most useful resource for researchers and graduate students working in the broad field of partial differential equations and applications.

Imaging, Multi-scale and High Contrast Partial Differential Equations
Author: Habib Ammari
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1470419238
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 160
Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the Seoul ICM 2014 Satellite Conference on Imaging, Multi-scale and High-Contrast PDEs, held from August 7-9, 2014, in Daejeon, Korea. The mathematical analysis of partial differential equations modelling materials, or tissues, presenting multiple scales has been a very active area of research. The study of the corresponding imaging or reconstruction problem is a more recent area. If the material parameters of the partial differential equation present high contrast ratio, then the solution to the PDE becomes particularly challenging to analyze and compute. On the other hand, imaging in highly heterogeneous media poses significant challenges to the mathematical community. The focus of this volume is on recent progress towards complete understanding of the direct problem with high contrast or high frequencies, and unified approaches to the inverse and imaging problems for both small and large contrast or frequencies. Of particular importance in imaging are shape representation techniques and regularization approaches. Special attention is devoted to new models and problems coming from physics leading to innovative imaging and signal processing methods.
