Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, That the t1aCoint selectmen of the town of Worcester are authorized, engineers, and it shall be their duty, in the month of April (j: y Cnarter in each year, to appoint as many engineers for sc. 1st and ., ., . j ', u, /., ., 8, Ordinance their fire department as they may think expedient: No. 57. provided, such number so appointed shall not exceed twelve, who shall hold their offices for one year from and after the first day of May next succeeding, and until others are appointed in their places. The said selectmen are authorized and required to fill any vacancies in the said office of engineer, and the said engineers shall possess the same authority, and exercise the same powers in relation to the extinguishment of fires as firewards do, by law, possess and exercise. Sect. 2. Be it further enacted, That the said Orsaniza- selectmen, immediately after the appointment of Jera said engineers shall have been made, shall issue a warrant to one of their number, requiring him to notify a meeting of the board of engineers, at such time and place as shall be designated in such warrant, at which meeting the said engineers shall % jjartcr elect from their number a chief engineer, a clerk, and such other officers as they may deem necessary for their more complete organization.
