Book Description
This book offers the first sustained treatment of Sufism in the context of modern Muslim communities. It is also innovative, in that it broadens the purview of the study of Sufism to look at the subject right across international boundaries, from Canada to Brazil, and from Denmark to the UK and USA. Subjects discussed include: the politics of Sufism, the remaking of Turkish Sufism, tradition and cultural creativity among Syrian Sufi communities, the globalization of Sufi networks, and their transplantation in America, Iranian Sufism in London, and Naqshbandi Sufism in Sweden. In its thorough examination of how Sufi rituals, traditions and theologies have been adapted by late-modern religiosity, this volume will make indispensable reading for all scholars and students of modern Islam.

Book Description
Islam is a practical religion dealing with the warring traits of human nature and bending them to the Straight Path. It has discarded the law of the jungle, and the motto of might is right. The Islamic concept of justice is positive. It does not stop at the negation of the wrong but goes forward to promote the right so that there remains no incompatibility between the so-called justice and what is really just and equitable. The concept of Islamic justice does not permit prejudice against anyone. The Quranic Injunction is: "...and let not the hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly...." [TMQ Surah Maidah: 8] Under Islam, justice is the sum total of life. To do injustice is sinful. To suffer injustice calls for positive remedial action on the part of Muslims. Such action might mean even the supreme sacrifice of one's life for the sake of justice. This book is an English rendering of a popular Arabic book entitled Adab Al Qadi, Written by the renowned Muslim Jurist Imam Khassaf. In this book, the learned author has favored us with the basic principle of the Islamic judicial system and that of the Judiciary in the light of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah. The Learned Translator of this book Justice Dr.Muneer Ahmad Mughal, was himself a Judge of the Lahore High Court, Lahore. He has perfect hold on the subject and over both the languages.

Book Description
All of the texts chosen for this volume are interesting in their own right, but the collection of these sources into a single volume, with helpful introductions and bibliographies, makes this book an invaluable resource for the study of Arabic Christianity and, indeed, the history of Christianity more broadly. ― Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies Arabic was among the first languages in which the Gospel was preached. The Book of Acts mentions Arabs as being present at the first Pentecost in Jerusalem, where they heard the Christian message in their native tongue. Christian literature in Arabic is at least 1,300 years old, the oldest surviving texts dating from the 8th century. Pre-modern Arab Christian literature embraces such diverse genres as Arabic translations of the Bible and the Church Fathers, biblical commentaries, lives of the saints, theological and polemical treatises, devotional poetry, philosophy, medicine, and history. Yet in the Western historiography of Christianity, the Arab Christian Middle East is treated only peripherally, if at all. The first of its kind, this anthology makes accessible in English representative selections from major Arab Christian works written between the eighth and eigtheenth centuries. The translations are idiomatic while preserving the character of the original. The popular assumption is that in the wake of the Islamic conquests, Christianity abandoned the Middle East to flourish elsewhere, leaving its original heartland devoid of an indigenous Christian presence. Until now, several of these important texts have remained unpublished or unavailable in English. Translated by leading scholars, these texts represent the major genres of Orthodox literature in Arabic. Noble and Treiger provide an introduction that helps form a comprehensive history of Christians within the Muslim world. The collection marks an important contribution to the history of medieval Christianity and the history of the medieval Near East.

Book Description
Sufism is often overlooked when it comes to scholarly consideration of the politics of the Muslim world. This is partly due to the difficulty of defining Sufism, which is both spiritual outlook and social institution. Both aspects, however, have been important factors in the variegated involvement of Sufism in the politics of Muslim society, past and present alike. The articles comprising this volume aim to consolidate thinking about the political dimension of Sufism across culture and history and to offer new horizons for scholarly reflection on the socio-political role played by Sufism in both pre-modern and modern Muslim society. Sufism has been an active player in defining the societal nature of Islam, no less than its theological nature, and this volume underscores the way in which Sufism has played that role while adapting itself to changing political conditions. -- Back cover.
