Publisher:
ISBN: 9780195134056
Category : Historical jurisprudence
Languages : en

Book Description
The Oxford International Encyclopedia of Legal History is a comprehensive, international, interdisciplinary reference work that includes approximately 1,000 articles on all aspects of legal history throughout the world from ancient to modern times. Articles deal with private law, public law, and constitutional/higher law throughout the world and are written and signed by one of the many noteworthy contributors, which include major scholars and experts. For years, scholars have been investigating the remote origins of their respective national and religious law. Only recently has there been a developing interest in and study of the history of law in modern times. This encyclopedia will bring together the study of ancient law with the study of modern law-examining statutes and administrative rulings as well as judicial decisions, legislatures, agencies, and courts. The Encyclopedia will cover ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern law in eight legal traditions and geographical/cultural areas: Ancient Greek Law, Ancient Roman Law, Chinese Law, English Common Law, Islamic Law, Medieval Roman Law, United States Law, and law in other regions (Africa, Latin America, and South Asia among them). It will address major categories of law within these traditions, including private law (contract, tort, civil procedure), varieties of public law (criminal law, administrative law, statutory law), and higher law/ constitutional law. It will be the first encyclopedia of law to provide historical and contemporary comparisons of world legal systems. - Publisher.

Index Analysis of the Federal Statutes (general Permanent Law) 1789-1873 [1873-1907] ...
Author: United States
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 1176
Book Description
“In the Statutes at Large and Revised Statutes of 1873 there are over 40,000 quarto pages. The lack of a practical quide to the innumerable subjects on which Congress had legislated since 1789 was felt by certain Members of the House and Senate in connections with their work of drafting and criticizing bills. During the last days of the session of Congress which ended June 30, 1906, the authors of the present volume proposed the preparation of an Index Analysis to the Federal Statutes. By an amendment made in the House to the sundry civil bill, the appropriation asked for to undertake the present experiment was provided. The volume of the Index Analysis covering the general and permanent law from 1873 to 1907 was published in 1908, under directions from Congress (34 Stat. L., 1399), to “expedite the preparation of that part of the new index to the Statutes at Large which is an index to the statutes enacted since the year 1873.” “

Antitrust Cases, Economic Notes, and Other Materials
Author: Richard A. Posner
Publisher: West Academic Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Antitrust law
Languages : en
Pages : 1144
Book Description
The authors have developed a natural order for students to understand the antitrust field based upon a division of the practices challenged into two groups. One group of competing firms eliminate competition purely among themselves. The second group of firms seek to exclude actual or potential competitors. In selecting and editing cases, the authors have preserved a sense of the historical development and jurisprudential character of antitrust law. In citing lower-court cases and secondary materials, the authors have selected only material that casts significant illumination on the subject.

The Mismeasure of Man (Revised and Expanded)
Author: Stephen Jay Gould
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393340406
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 458
Book Description
The definitive refutation to the argument of The Bell Curve. When published in 1981, The Mismeasure of Man was immediately hailed as a masterwork, the ringing answer to those who would classify people, rank them according to their supposed genetic gifts and limits. And yet the idea of innate limits—of biology as destiny—dies hard, as witness the attention devoted to The Bell Curve, whose arguments are here so effectively anticipated and thoroughly undermined by Stephen Jay Gould. In this edition Dr. Gould has written a substantial new introduction telling how and why he wrote the book and tracing the subsequent history of the controversy on innateness right through The Bell Curve. Further, he has added five essays on questions of The Bell Curve in particular and on race, racism, and biological determinism in general. These additions strengthen the book's claim to be, as Leo J. Kamin of Princeton University has said, "a major contribution toward deflating pseudo-biological 'explanations' of our present social woes."
