This issue of the Journal of Latin American Theology presents some of the papers given at the Seventh Latin American Conference of the Red Internacional de Educación Superior Cristiana (RIESC). Designed around the theme “Higher Education, Christian Identity, and Public Impact in Latin America,” the authors herein explore the challenges and the people involved in the three primary tasks of a university: teaching, research, and community engagement through university extension projects. Alberto Salom Echevarría’s keynote address lays out the seven primary challenges that secular and faith-based universities alike are facing. The three articles that follow feature concrete examples of successfully facing some of the challenges. These are by Joel Aguilar and Ruth Padilla DeBorst with CETI; Alejandra Ortiz and Josué Olmedo with IFES; and Humberto Shikiya and Milton Mejía with Qonakuy. In the next four articles, professors in different fi elds interact with the RIESC conference theme from within their specifi c disciplines. This includes Adelaida Jiménez in educational sciences; José Alcántara Mejía in literature and the arts; Arturo González-Gutiérrez in engineering; and Ingrid Beatriz Martell in health sciences. This volume of the Journal of Latin American Theology and the fall 2019 volume are dedicated to providing an up-to-date analysis of Christianity in current Latin American societies. This work explores the contribution of major Latin American theologians to contemporary politics. Aguilar argues that within the Latin American context there has been a rediscovery of a fluid and sometimes contradictory relationship between the practice of religion and the practice of politics. For Christians in that context were forced to respond to a crisis in politics, whereby their own beliefs, practices, and way of life was pushed to the limit by human rights violations and absolutist forms of government. The Christian response was a confrontation against the state, the case of Chile, or a dissenting silence, the case of Argentina. The historical relations between Church and state has been well documented but with the advent of democratic governments and the collapse of socialist regimes in Eastern Europe those narratives were given less attention by theologians and Christians around the globe. However, the basic relations between religion and politics outlined by Gutierrez became the Christian manifesto for Christian actions related to more contemporary problems in Latin America and the Third World: contemporary problems of land ownership, the neo-liberal economic conquest of the Third World, the oppression of women, the destruction of rainforests, global warming, corruption, and indigenous rights. In order to understand what became a Christian manifesto and the influence the pioneers of liberation theology has had on Christian action today one must depart from the well-known first period of Liberation theology - while acknowledging as all formative and seminal for discussions today and in the future.

Corruption... The mere word brings up negative, and all too prevalent, images in our minds: bribes, abuse of power, and favoritism among our political leaders, business leaders, and even among our religious leaders. It is commonplace for Christians to rail against rampant corruption and lament its existence. What is not so common is to hear a thoughtful analysis of the factors that lead to and feed corruption. Even more scarce are practical and proven steps that we can take to reduce the levels of corruption in our societies. With these thoughts in mind, the Fraternidad Teológica Latinoamericana invited Christian leaders to tackle this issue head on at an international conference titled “Corruption Kills: Biblical, Contextual, and Ethical Perspectives.” Held in Lima, Peru from July 23–25, 2016, participants gave presentations that ranged from biblical and theological analysis of corruption to practical experiences of fighting it. Though our hearts are heavy due to the subject matter, it is our privilege to share with you in this issue of the Journal of Latin American Theology some of the key presentations of that conference.

Historian Sidney Rooy helps us navigate the history of Latin American Protestantism to explore the impact, or lack thereof, of the Lausanne Covenant on church life in the Latin American world. The Affirmation of San Rafael de Heredia, the final document from the 2014 conference, is a challenging yet deeply encouraging document that will guide the FTL on a large and small scale in the coming years. Finally, Juan Jose Barreda, focusing on the Bible's overarching emphasis on excluded peoples and availing himself of the tools of biblical sciences, takes us on a tour of different approaches to reading the sacred texts.
