Book Description
A review of theoretical work by the author and collaborators and related experiments is presented for two segments of laser-induced chemistry: molecular dynamics and rate processes in the gas phase and at a solid surface and gas-surface interface. For the gas phase, the focus is on situations where the radiation interacts directly with the dynamics to enhance or create new processes. The field of laser-surface chemistry is still undergoing a procedure of definition, and progress to date is discussed. Theoretical failures as well as successes are analyzed and viewpoints are offered as to new directions for both theory and experiment. (Author).

Book Description
Various theoretical approaches to laser-induced molecular dynamics in the context of multiphoton processes are reviewed. The presentation is divided into two general categories: gas-phase processes and surface processes. Within the first category, unimolecular dynamics and molecular collisions are addressed. Within the second category, energy flow in adspecies-surface systems is examined, and laser applications to surface chemistry are discussed.

Book Description
Since the first stimulated emission pumping (SEP) experiments more than a decade ago, this technique has proven powerful for studying vibrationally excited molecules. SEP is now widely used by increasing numbers of research groups to investigate fundamental problems in spectroscopy, intramolecular dynamics, intermolecular interactions, and even reactions. SEP provides rotationally pre-selected spectra of vibrationally highly excited molecules undergoing large amplitude motions. A unique feature of SEP is the ability to access systematically a wide variety of extreme excitations localized in various parts of a molecule, and to prepare populations in specific, high vibrational levels. SEP has made it possible to ask and answer specific questions about intramolecular vibrational redistribution and the role of vibrational excitation in chemical reactions.

Book Description
This conference on both the physics and chemistry of laser-induced processes in molecules was organized by the Quantum Electronics Divisional Board of the European Physical Society whose membership is given on p.367. The confer ence aim, to mix physicists and chemists interested in this exciting field both from Europe and further afield, was well fulfilled by the attendance of around 250 participants and the submission of about 100 papers, which dre presented here. Numerous people at both the Physics Department, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and at the Projektgruppe fUr Laserforschung, MPI, Garching, con tributed hard work to the organization; in addition to Dr. Bob Harrison, who bore the biggest burden with conspicuous success, we particularly thank Hugh MacKenzie, Richard Dennis and last but not least Miss Joanne Askham and the secretaries in Edinburgh together with Frau Doris Maischberger and the secretaries in Garching. Book Description
In view of the rapid growth in both experimental and theoretical studies of multiphoton processes and multiphoton spectroscopy of atoms, ions and molecules in many interdisciplinary fields, an Advanced Series that contains review papers readable not only to active researchers in these areas but also to those who are not experts in the field but intend to enter the field is very necessary. This series attempts to serve this purpose. Each review article is written in a self-contained manner by the experts in the area so that the readers can grasp the knowledge in the area without too much preparation. The collection of topics in this volume will prove useful, valuable and stimulating not only to active researchers but also to other scientists in the areas of biology, chemistry, materials science and physics.
