Book Description
One of the main objectives of this work is to analyze the data on reproduction and growth that might be useful in practical aquaculture and the industry. Hence, the scope of investigations on echinoderms has been confined to economically important species - sea cucumbers, sea urchins and sea stars. Members of the first two classes, such as bivalves, represent objects of aquaculture and industry, while sea stars damage them by attacking molluscs. This wide-ranging material has been presented within a conceptual framework of types of reproductive strategy, classified as: planktotrophic larval, lecithotrophic larval and lecithotrophic embryonic. The book provides a detailed description of planktotrphic larval reproductive strategy and describes its consequences on the ecology, population and other specific features.

Book Description
This text describes larvae of bivalves and echinoderms living in the Sea of Japan, which are or may be economically important, and where adult forms are dominant in benthic communities. Descriptions of 18 species of bivalves and 10 species of echinoderms are given and keys provided for the identification of planktotrophic larvae of bivalves and echinoderms to the family level. Information on identified species is preceded by a description of teh morphology, physiology and behaviour of larvae of the given classes.

Book Description
This is the first book to provide a detailed treatment of the field of larval ecology. The 13 chapters use state-of-the-art reviews and critiques of nearly all of the major topics in this diverse and rapidly growing field. Topics include: patterns of larval diversity, reproductive energetics, spawning ecology, life history theory, larval feeding and nutrition, larval mortality, behavior and locomotion, larval transport, dispersal, population genetics, recruitment dynamics and larval evolution. Written by the leading new scientists in the field, chapters define the current state of larval ecology and outline the important questions for future research.

Book Description
Many biological facts are irreconcilable with the assumption that larvae and adults evolved from the same genetic stock. The author of this book draws attention to these, and presents his alternative hypothesis that larvae have been transferred from one taxon to another. In his previous book (Larvae and Evolution, 1992), the author used larval transfer to explain developmental anomalies in eight animal phyla. In the present book, he claims that the basic forms of all larvae and all embryos have been transferred from foreign taxa. This leads to a new, comprehensive theory on the origin of embryos and larvae, replacing the discredited 'recapitulation' theory of Haeckel (1866). Metamorphosis, previously unexplained, represents a change in taxon during development.
