This book proposes that phonological contrast, in particular the robustness of a phonemic contrast, does not depend solely on the presence of minimal pairs, but is instead affected by a set of phonetic, usage-based, and systemic factors. This perspective opens phonology to a more direct interpretation through phonetic analysis, undertaken in a series of case studies on the Romanian vowel system. Both the synchronic phonetics and morpho-phonological alternations are studied, to understand the forces that have historically shaped and now maintain the phonemic system of Romanian. A corpus study of phoneme type frequency in Romanian reveals marginal contrasts among vowels, in which a sharp distinction between allophones and phonemes fails to capture relationships among sounds. An investigation of Romanian /Ɨ/ provides insight into the historical roots of marginal contrast, and a large acoustic study of Romanian vowels and diphthongs is a backdrop for evaluating the phonetic and perceptual realization of marginal contrast. The results provide impetus for a model in which phonology, phonetics, morphology and perception interact in a multidimensional way.

An Integrated Approach to Curricular Contents: Particular Features for Primary Schools is closely related to the elements constituting the educational and curricular reform in Romania. The content integrated approach enables the student to undergo a complete development, both on a personal and social level. Competences are acquired and developed in a progressive manner through interactive and cumulative processes leading to both specific competences (pertaining to a certain discipline) and transdisciplinary competences (competences that cross several disciplinary boundaries). Currently, the curricular integrated approach paradigm within the Romanian educational system is reflected in an explicit manner at the level of educational policies. A new evaluation system has been laid down and promoted through the National Education Law no.1/2011 which will lead to the optimization of the whole Romanian educational system. This law conceives and promotes a new evaluation system that will lead to the reconstruction and consolidation of an integrated vision pertaining to both the process of teaching-learning-evaluation and the optimization of the whole Romanian educational system. As such, the present work provides answers to some educational policy challenges and reflects on curriculum policy and educational enforcement. It will be of great use and interest to curriculum scholars, to primary school teachers and to teacher trainees. The work has a pragmatic feature, emphasizing both the authors’ thoughts and the knowledge gained throughout vast experience of teaching. Moreover, certain concrete and validated practical teaching methods are provided, in order to design the integrated activity sequences at primary school level, among which an emphasis on certain curricular aspects that are useful within an integrated approach represents the original feature of the present work and a practical feature of integrated knowledge.

Anger is one of the basic emotions of human emotional experience, informing and guiding many of our choices and actions. Although it has received considerable scholarly attention in a number of disciplines, including linguistics, a basic question has still remained unresolved: why do variations in the folk model of anger exist across languages if it is indeed a basic emotion rooted in largely universal bodily experience? By drawing on a wide selection of comparable linguistic data from dozens of languages (including a number of less-researched languages), this volume provides the most comprehensive account of what is universal and what is variable in the folk model of anger – and why. It also investigates the role that metonymies might play in the emergence of anger-related metaphors and in what ways context influences or shapes anger metaphors and thereby the resulting folk model of anger. This language sketch will make an attempt at outlining Daco-Romanian. Daco- Romanian is one of four types of Balkan Romance, and among these it is by far the mostspoken - Daco-Romanian (hereafter referred to as Romanian again for reasons of simplicity) has some 21 million speakers, most of whom live in today's Romania and Moldavia, while the other three types are spoken by only a few thousand speakers each. Romanian itself has two principal dialects, Moldavian and Muntenian. The latter is the one that underlies the literary language that developed in the 18th century and it is based on the language spoken in Bucharest, and it is also the dialect this phonetic approach will come closest to.
