Martens and Fishers (Martes) in Human-Altered Environments: An International Perspective examines the conditions where humans and martens are compatible and incompatible, and promotes land use practices that allow Martes to be representatively distributed and viable. All Martes have been documented to use forested habitats and 6 species (excluding the stone marten) are generally considered to require complex mid- to late-successional forests throughout much of their geographic ranges. All species in the genus require complex horizontal and vertical structure to provide escape cover protection from predators, habitat for their prey, access to food resources, and protection from the elements. Martens and the fisher have high metabolic rates, have large spatial requirements, have high surface area to volume ratios for animals that often inhabit high latitudes, and often require among the largest home range areas per unit body weight of any group of mammals. Resulting from these unique life history characteristics, this genus is particularly sensitive to human influences on their habitats, including habitat loss, stand-scale simplification of forest structure via some forms of logging, and landscape-scale effects of habitat fragmentation. Given their strong associations with structural complexity in forests, martens and the fisher are often considered as useful barometers of forest health and have been used as ecological indicators, flagship, and umbrella species in different parts of the world. Thus, efforts to successfully conserve and manage martens and fishers are associated with the ecological fates of other forest dependent species and can greatly influence ecosystem integrity within forests that are increasingly shared among wildlife and humans. We have made great strides in our fundamental understanding of how animals with these unique life history traits perceive and utilize habitats, respond to habitat change, and how their populations function and perform under different forms of human management and mismanagement. This knowledge enhances our basic understanding of all species of Martes and will help us to achieve the goal of conserving viable populations and representative distributions of the world’s Martes, their habitats, and associated ecological communities in our new millennium.

Habitat quality for American martens (Martes americana) has been associated with mature coniferous forests, complex forest structure, unharvested forests, and unfragmented landscapes, but the relative importance of these attributes are unclear. I used snow-tracking and track plate surveys to sample marten habitat use during the winters and summers of 2002 and 2003 in central Ontario. Summer habitat use was associated with reduced basal area at the stand scale, and patches of low canopy closure and mature and mixedwood forests at the landscape scales. During winter, habitat use was described by track abundances of prey species and relatively high basal area. Highly used winter landscapes included patches of high basal area and lacked mixedwood forests. Increased habitat use was unrelated to forest types at the stand scale and most aspects of silvicultural history, but changed seasonally in relation to forest structure, which has implications for the management of marten habitat.

The distribution of American martens (Martes americana) within Sagehen Creek Experimental Forest (SCEF), Tahoe National Forest, California has been periodically documented from 1980-1993. This area has been the location of nine marten surveys, each involving a systematic detection/nondetection survey on the same grid. These data are an unprecedented time series of information on the distribution of martens that can be related to habitat change in the study area. My four objectives were to (1) resurvey SCEF using similar methodology as in previous studies to assess the current marten distribution, (2) evaluate marten distribution over the last 28 years, (3) create maps to depict potential high reproductive habitat at the beginning (1978) and end (2007) of the series, and lastly, (4) examine marten occurence relative to changes in habitat and landscape metrics. Marten surveys were conducted in summer 2007, in winter 2007-2008, and in summer 2008. Habitat was characterized both in 1978 and 2007 by interpreting remotely sensed vegetation information from the California Wildlife Habitat Relationship (CWHR) system. I used FRAGSTATs to quantify landscape change. There was a dramatic decline in marten occurrence since they were first studied in this area. No martens were detected in either the summer of 2007 or summer 2008, but there were 10 detections in winter 2007-2008 limited to the southwestern portion of SCEF. Predicted habitat patch size, core area, and total amount of predicted habitat in the study area decreased. Distance between these patches increased. There was a relationship between these changes in landscape configuration and the reduction of marten detections; no martens were detected in the lower elevations where most previous management activity occurred. I have five recommendations to managers to make the landscape more amenable for martens: (1) strive to retain the remaining contiguous large patches of predicted marten reproductive habitat, (2) maintain corridors of dense, multilayered vegetation between the contiguous habitat patches, (3) retain varied amounts of canopy and shrub cover for visual camouflage between habitat patches, (4) reduce the number of cleared forest gaps >80 m across, and (5) strive for a silvicultural paradigm that retains large snags, diverse tree structure, and patches of decadent trees.

We used bivariate scaling and logistic regression to investigate multiple-scale habitat selection by American marten (Martes americana). Bivariate scaling reveals dramatic differences in the apparent nature and strength of relationships between marten occupancy and a number of habitat variables across a range of spatial scales. These differences include reversals in the direction of an observed association from positive to negative and frequent dramatic changes in the apparent importance of a habitat variable as a predictor of marten occurrence. Logistic regression on the optimally scaled input variables suggests that at the scale of home ranges, marten select landscapes with high average canopy closure and low fragmentation. Within these low fragmented landscapes, marten select foraging habitat at a fine scale within late-seral, middle-elevation mesic forests. In northern Idaho, optimum American marten habitat, therefore, consists of landscapes with low road density, low density of non-forest patches with high canopy closure, and large areas of middle-elevation, late successional mesic forest. Comparison of current landscape conditions to those expected under the historic range of variability indicates that road building and timber harvest in the past century may have substantially reduced the amount of suitable marten habitat in northern Idaho. Our results are generally consistent with previous research in the Rocky Mountains, with additional insights related to the relative importance, functional form, and scale at which each habitat variable has the largest influence on marten occurrence.
