Following its initial publication in 2005, A Byzantine Settlement in Cappadocia has become a seminal work in interpreting the rich material remains of Byzantine Cappadocia. In the first systematic site survey from the region, at the settlement known as Çanlı Kilise in Western Cappadocia, the careful mapping and documentation of rock-cut and masonry architecture and its decoration led to a complete reexamination of the place of Cappadocia within the larger framework of Byzantine social and cultural developments. This revised edition builds upon its predecessor with an updated preface, a new bibliography, and a new master map of the Çanlı Kilise site. Based on four seasons of fieldwork, Ousterhout challenges the commonly accepted notion that the rock-cut settlements of Cappadocia were primarily monastic. He proposes instead that the settlement at Çanlı Kilise was a town, replete with mansions, hovels, barns, stables, storerooms, cisterns, dovecotes, wine presses, fortifications, places of refuge, churches, chapels, cemeteries, and a few monasteries--that is, features common to most Byzantine communities. A Byzantine Settlement in Cappadocia has led to a rethinking of such sites and to a view of Cappadocia as an untapped resource for the study of material culture and daily life within the Byzantine Empire.

L'analyse des extraits naturels est de nos jours réalisée à l'aide de nombreuses techniques d'analyse plus ou moins complexes. Parmi ces techniques, l'HPTLC est bien connue en tant qu'outil d'identification phytochimique. Le but de cette thèse a été d'étudier l'apport de cette technique dans l'analyse des extraits naturels en dehors de son aspect « identification ». Ce travail a conduit à différentes études permettant de mettre en évidence des applications peu connues de l'HPTLC comme par exemple son utilisation comme technique semi-preparative. De plus, sa capacité à avoir une phase stationnaire résistante à différente matrices a été testée. Il a ainsi pu être démontré que cette caractéristique lui donnait l'avantage de procéder à des préparations d'échantillon plus minimaliste que les autres techniques de chromatographie. L'aspect quantitatif a été évalué et comparé à l'HPLC et a ainsi pu démontrer que des résultats équivalents sont obtenus, néanmoins, le manque de résolution et de précision ne permet pas à l'HPTLC d'attendre les exigences parfois demandées. Enfin, l'analyse d'un grand nombre d'échantillon a permis de montrer un des avantages de l'HPTLC dans le retraitement de données, que ce soit par regroupement visuel des profils obtenus ou par retraitement statistique.

Green Marine Clays provides a comparative study of four authigenic marine clays: the well-known glaucony marine facies; the newly-identified sedimentary facies - verdine; the old oolitic ironstone facies; and the celadonite-bearing facies.The book demonstrates that the sea bottom plays host to a variety of clay minerals specific to the marine environment: ferric di-trioctahedral ``serpentine'', ferric chlorite, ferric smectite, ferric mica, ferric ``swelling chlorite'', all widespread in present oceans and all fundamentally formed by crystal growth and recrystallization processes in semi-confined marine microenvironments.A unique feature of the book is the inclusion of the first detailed study of the verdine facies characterized by a variety of authigenic green clays, some of which are new clay mineral species widespread in all tropical oceans.
