Book Description
Waste Management Policies and Practices in BRICS Nations explores recent developments in waste management. BRICS nations are the emerging economies of the world. Increasing populations, urbanization, industrialization and uses of chemical fertilizer and pesticide in agriculture for enhanced productivity of food, especially in India and China, to support the large populations harm the natural environment. The rise in the living standards of the human population has increased environmental pollution manifold, resulting in the huge generation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste simultaneously, which has contaminated natural resources such as soil, water and air. It has led to undesirable effects on the environment and human health. The book offers comprehensive coverage of the most essential topics, including: Waste management problems with special reference to MSW in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa Solid waste management in BRICS nations Hazardous waste management in BRICS nations Policies and laws in BRICS nations This book contains both policies and methods used for the management of waste in BRICS nations. The chapters incorporate both policies and practical aspects.

Waste Management and Resource Recycling in the Developing World
Author: Pardeep Singh
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323904645
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 872
Book Description
Waste Management and Resource Recycling in the Developing World provides a unique perspective on the state of waste management and resource recycling in the developing world, offering practical solutions based on innovative tools and technologies, along with examples and case studies. The book is organized by waste type, including electronic, industrial and biomedical/hazardous, with each section covering advanced techniques, such as remote sensing and GIS, as well as socioeconomic factors, transnational transport and policy implications. Waste managers, environmental scientists, sustainability practitioners, and engineers will find this a valuable resource for addressing the challenges of waste management in the developing world. There is high potential for waste management to produce energy and value-added products. Sustainable waste management based on a circular economy not only improves sanitation, it also provides economic and environmental benefits. In addition to waste minimization, waste-to-economy and waste-to-energy have become integral parts of waste management practices. A proper waste management strategy not only leads to reduction in environmental pollution but also moves toward generating sufficient energy for improving environmental sustainability in coming decades. - Presents case studies in every section to illustrate practical applications across the globe - Includes lessons learned from developed regions that can be applied to developing regions - Organized by type of waste, with consistent coverage in each section to promote ease of navigation

3rd Annual Meeting of the Portuguese Association of Energy Economics & 5th Meeting of Environmental and Energy Economics
Author: Lígia Pinto
Publisher: UMinho Editora
ISBN: 989897401X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
The 3rd Annual Conference of the Portuguese Association of Energy Economics – APEEN and the International Meeting on Energy and Environmental Economics – ME3 took place on the 18-19 October 2018 in Braga, Portugal. The event was hosted by the Universidade do Minho and gathered the contributions of specialists in Energy and Environmental Economics to enrich the debate about the many issues raised by the management of resources and waste. The main topic was Managing Resources and Waste: challenges for Energy and Environmental Economics beyond 2030. Natural resources are the keystone in environmental and energy economics. Nowadays, resource management cannot ignore waste, traditionally seen as a by-product of consumption and production decisions, but increasingly recognized as a source of energy or as new type of resource. The APEEN & ME3 joint conference had over 50 presentations from researchers from all over the world and lively discussions. Some of these presentations are summarized in the short papers compiled in this Book of Proceedings. We are grateful to have had the presence and contribution of the keynote speakers: Maria L. Loureiro (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) and Martin Brocklehurst (Kempley Green Consultants). Their speeches challenged us now to think of new research and business opportunities beyond 2030. On behalf of the organizing committee, I thank our sponsor, LIPOR, and all presenters for their academic excellence and lively participation. Lígia Pinto, Universidade do Minho

Brazil in the Anthropocene
Author: Liz-Rejane Issberner
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134844298
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 391
Book Description
Brazil is considered one of the world’s most important environmental powers. With a continental territory containing almost 70 per cent of the Amazon rainforest, along with a rich biodiversity and huge amount of natural resources, its geopolitical role in environmental decisions is crucial to ongoing global negotiations surrounding climate change. Development policies based on extraction and exportation of raw materials by the mining and agribusiness sectors threaten the global environmental balance and the long-term sustainability of Brazil’s economy. Brazil in the Anthropocene examines Brazil's role within the global ecological crisis and considers how national and international policy is influenced by the interdependence of social, political, ethical, scientific and economic factors in the modern age. With chapters from a diverse range of international scholars this interdisciplinary volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental politics, environmental sociology and the environmental humanities.

Reverse logistics of waste electrical and electronic equipment and environmental sustainability
Author: Uanderson Rebula de Oliveira
Publisher: Babelcube Inc.
ISBN: 1547578408
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 706
Book Description
The sale of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) is growing worldwide due to technological innovations and the speed with which they become obsolete, which increases the production of a solid residue called Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), or e-Waste. WEEE is a relevant problem, as it contains several toxic substances capable of harming the environment and human health. This is why a proper environmental management is required. After the creation of the National Policy on Solid Waste (PNRS) in Brazil - Law No. 12.305, of August 2, 2010, manufacturers, importers, distributors, and traders have become responsible for implementing Reverse Logistics (RL) systems, which aim at the return of products after use by the consumer. Although the electronics industry is concerned about the RL of its products, RL of WEEE is not a subject widely addressed within Brazil or internationally. In fact, "e-waste" is a new subject in the world literature. This book aims to identify how WEEE management can contribute to the improvement of the EEE supply chain performance in Brazil, at an environmental sustainability point of view. Therefore, we identify: The global and Brazilian background, overview, and perspectives to improving solid waste and WEEE management at an environmental sustainability point of view; Brazilian legislation and practices; international legislation and good practices in WEEE management, which suggest improvements to the WEEE management in Brazil; and good practices in using product identification technologies, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in e-waste reverse logistics systems, such as the renowned Hewlett-Packard (HP) Smartwaste Project.

The Routledge Handbook of Waste Studies
Author: Zsuzsa Gille
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000523152
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 353
Book Description
The Routledge Handbook of Waste Studies offers a comprehensive survey of the new field of waste studies, critically interrogating the cultural, social, economic, and political systems within which waste is created, managed, and circulated. While scholars have not settled on a definitive categorization of what waste studies is, more and more researchers claim that there is a distinct cluster of inquiries, concepts, theories and key themes that constitute this field. In this handbook the editors and contributors explore the research questions, methods, and case studies preoccupying academics working in this field, in an attempt to develop a set of criteria by which to define and understand waste studies as an interdisciplinary field of study. This handbook will be invaluable to those wishing to broaden their understanding of waste studies and to students and practitioners of geography, sociology, anthropology, history, environment, and sustainability studies.
