La importancia del deporte en el mundo actual ha trascendido del entretenimiento al ámbito social y económico, estableciéndose como un sector más de la Economía con gran relevancia. En concreto, la celebración de grandes eventos deportivos se identifica como una generación de ingresos y beneficios para el territorio donde son acogidos y para las empresas y entes públicos que lo hacen posible. Dentro de ellos, existe un amplio número de acontecimientos organizados a menor dimensión, que, aunque no despiertan gran interés mediático, tienen una gran capacidad para la generación de riqueza al atraer a muchos participantes y espectadores. Sin embargo, se critica en muchas ocasiones que estos estudios aparecen sobrevalorados, influidos por los intereses de los agentes implicados.El presente trabajo ofrece un acercamiento conceptual a los efectos del deporte como actividad económica y a su incidencia económica para, posteriormente analizar las diferentes técnicas de cuantificación de impacto y la problemática existente en este tipo de estudios según la literatura. Finalmente, se presenta un caso práctico para evaluar el impacto económico de la celebración de citas deportivas a nivel autonómico, realizando un análisis coste-beneficio de los eventos baloncestísticos celebrados en la Comunidad de Castilla y León en la temporada 2018-2019. El sistema deportivo con todos sus agentes y, en definitiva la industria deportiva, en cualquiera de sus distintas cadenas de valor, ha visto trastocados sus planes de desarrollo y crecimiento. El deporte, de manera análoga a lo que sucede en el conjunto de la actividad económica, pasa por una época convulsa y singular, como lo es la propia pandemia.
