El 6 de diciembre de 1996 la UNESCO declaraba a Cuenca como Ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad por ser un ejemplo de ciudad medieval fortificada que conserva su paisaje urbano original y que confluye a la perfección con paisaje natural que la rodea. Han pasado casi 27 años y Cuenca ha mantenido esos valores que la hicieron merecedora de ese galardón, adaptándose a los nuevos tiempos, pero conservando esa raíz histórica que la ata a las rocas sobre las que está erigida. Esa herencia recibida debemos gestionarla de manera adecuada, ya que es nuestro bien más preciado. Por ello, era necesario reunir en una monografía a diversos expertos que analizasen desde un punto de vista interdisciplinar algunas cuestiones de los procesos formativos de la ciudad, tanto geográficos como históricos, y constructivos. Así surge este trabajo, que bajo el título La construcción y el paisaje en las ciudades Patrimonio Mundial. Historia, gestión y procesos, nos adentra en los valores que hicieron a Cuenca merecedora de ser ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad y en cómo se debe gestionar este galardón en el futuro.

The number of cultural parks has been steadily increasing in recent years throughout the world. But what is a cultural park? This book provides a detailed answer to this question and sets out the basis for an academic debate that moves beyond the technical narratives that have prevailed to date. It is important to open up the topic to academic scrutiny given that cultural parks are becoming widespread devices being employed by different institutions and social groups to manage and enhance cultural and natural heritage assets and landscapes. The main problem in dealing with this topic is the predominant lack of theory-grounded, critical reflection in the literature about cultural parks. These remain largely conceived as technical instruments deployed by institutions in order to solve an array of problems they must deal with. In the papers collected in this, the first volume of the Spatial Practices series, Englishness is reflected in the spaces it occupies or dwells in. Broadly influenced by a renewed and growing interest in questions of cultural identity, its emergence in Victorian theories and fictions of nationality, and the new cultural geography, the papers cover a rich variety of spaces and places which have been appropriated for cultural meanings: the rural countryside and farmland of the Home Counties in the early nineteenth century as Arcadian idyll in Cobbett, as the land to die for in war propaganda, and as nostalgia for a unified, organic English culture in Lawrence, Morton and Priestley’s travel writing, but also in the Shell Tourist Guides to motoring in rural England; English moorland; the sacred geographies of monuments in Hardy and others; the traditional seaside deconstructed in Martin Parr’s photography, and the sea as English Victorian imperial territory and its symbolic breezes in Froude’s travel writing. The English landscape is also a paradigm for the description of other places in D. H. Lawrence’s travel writing or for the colonial territory itself in Rushdie’s writing India, a displacement of other landscapes. This collection of papers examines the assumption that constructions of rural England provide the basis for an understanding of Englishness.
