Crusading in the twelfth century was less a series of discrete events than a manifestation of an endemic phenomenon that touched almost every aspect of life at that time. The defense of Christendom and the recovery of the Holy Land were widely-shared objectives. Thousands of men, and not a few women, participated in the crusades, including not only those who took the cross but many others who shared the costs and losses, as well as the triumphs of the crusaders. This volume contains not a narrative account of the crusades in the twelfth century, but a group of studies illustrating many aspects of crusading that are often passed over in narrative histories, including the courses and historiography of the crusades, their background, ideology, and finances, and how they were seen in Europe. Included are revised and updated versions of Giles Constable's classic essays on medieval crusading, along with two major new studies on the cross of the crusaders and the Fourth Crusade, and two excursuses on the terminology of crusading and the numbering of the crusades. They provide an opportunity to meet some individual crusaders, such as Odo Arpinus, whose remarkable career carried him from France to the east and back again, and whose legendary exploits in the Holy Land were recorded in the Old French crusade cycle. The Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order (‘Croniken van der Duytscher Oirden’) is a late-fifteenth-century Middle Dutch text that strongly influenced early modern historiography in north-eastern Europe. In German scholarship the text is commonly known as the Jüngere Hochmeisterchronik (‘Younger Chronicle of the Grand Masters’) and it offers a rare insight into the self-image of members of the military orders at that time. The chronicle describes the history of the Teutonic Order from its supposed biblical origins in the Holy Land to the order’s involvement in the Baltic crusades, to which a history of the local Utrecht bailiwick is added. Interwoven are summaries of papal and imperial privileges and indulgences, creating a mixture between the genres of crusading literature, gesta, and cartulary chronicles. This book offers a diplomatic edition and parallel English translation of the recently rediscovered ‘author’s copy’ (Vienna, Deutschordenszentralarchiv, Hs. 392), written in direct cooperation with the original author. It is the first complete edition of the Utrecht Chronicle and includes several passages that have never been edited. The English translation is the first translation into a modern language, introducing new audiences who are not proficient in Middle Dutch to the chronicle’s content. The book targets students and scholars of the crusades and military orders, as well as audiences interested in Baltic history, medieval chronicles, and Middle Dutch literature more broadly. It accompanies a recent study of the chronicle’s cultural context, wide range of sources, and its authorship, published in the same series in 2021.

Medieval Authorship and Cultural Exchange in the Late Fifteenth Century is a multidisciplinary study of late medieval authorship and the military orders, framed as a whodunit that uncovers the anonymous author of the ‘Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order’. Through a close analysis of the Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order and its manuscripts, and by exploiting a wide range of scholarly techniques, from traditional philology and extensive codicological examinations to modern digital humanities techniques, the book argues that the recently resurfaced Vienna manuscript is actually an author’s copy, written in direct cooperation with the original author. This important assertion leads to a reinterpretation of the text, its sources and composition, authorship, and the context in which it was conceived. It allows us to associate the text with an upsurge of historiographical activities by various military orders across the continent, seemingly in response to the publication and aggressive dissemination of the account of the Siege of Rhodes by Guillaume Caoursin in 1480. Furthermore, the text can be positioned at the crossroads between different cultural spheres, ranging from the Baltic region to the Low Countries, spanning French, German, Dutch, and Latin linguistic traditions. The early modern period opened a new era in the history of dermal marking. Intensifying global travel and trade, especially the slave trade, bought diverse skin-marking practices into contact as never before. Stigma examines the distinctive skin cultures and marking methods of Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas as they began to circulate and reshape one another in the early modern world. By highlighting the interwoven histories of tattooing, branding, stigmata, baptismal and beauty marks, wounds and scars, this volume shows that early modern markers of skin and readers of marked skin did not think about different kinds of cutaneous signs as separate from each other. On the contrary, Europeans described Indigenous tattooing in North America, Thailand, and the Philippines by referring their readers to the tattoos Christian pilgrims received in Jerusalem or Bethlehem. When explaining the devil’s mark on witches, theologians claimed it was an inversion of holy marks such as those of baptism or divine stigmata. Stigma investigates how early modern people used permanent marks on skin to affirm traditional roles and beliefs, and how they hybridized and transformed skin marking to meet new economic and political demands.
