Y, sin embargo, cada adaptacion de una obra conocida renueva la eterna polemica: se suele rechazar la pelicula lamentando que la complejidad del texto literario haya sido despreciada por la superficialidad de las imagenes. De la literatura al cine. Teoria y analisis de la adaptacion indaga en el nucleo de ese debate con voluntad de clarificar sus terminos y apreciar la convergencia basica entre cine y literatura: el arte de narrar. En la primera parte se abordan las dimensiones que tiene la relacion entre el cine y la literatura y se establece una tipologia con los procedimientos mas usuales de las adaptaciones, desde la mera plasmacion visual a la creatividad desplegada por cineastas tan singulares como Bunuel o Almodovar. En la segunda se ofrece una teoria del relato, basada en los estudios narratologicos mas solventes, que da cuenta de las convergencias entre obras literarias y filmicas. Y la tercera parte presenta seis modelos practicos de analisis de adaptaciones que se corresponden a textos literarios diversos. El libro, que se completa con una amplia filmografia con las principales obras de la literatura que han sido llevadas al cine, es el resultado de investigaciones y cursos y se dirige a los estudiosos interesados en el cine en cuanto relato y en el conocimiento de los trasvases culturales.

The book examines the links between literature and film in Latin America by using queer theory and a series of recent cultural productions whose arguments destabilize traditional gender roles and heteronormative masculinity. For many years, the connections between a literary text and its film adaptation have been considered only from the point of view of the latter’s fidelity to the written work, which many scholars imagined to be the original that filmmakers needed to respect. Within the last two decades, however, the idea of adaptation fidelity has been challenged by a number of critics who refute the existence of an original text and promote the notion of an ambiguous and complex relationship between a literary work and its film adaptation. Based on such developments and with the help of queer theory, this book questions and revises several crucial theoretical approximations that analyze the relations between the two art forms in an attempt to overcome the limitations of fidelity discourse. This is the first book-length study that seeks to examine, with the appropriate detail, the connections between film and literature in Latin America through the lenses of queer theory and by focusing on the representations of numerous practices that do not fit within the general framework of heteronormative sexuality.

The introductory essay integrates a retrospective survey of the development of adaptation studies with a forceful argument about their centrality to any history of culture--any discussion, that is, of the transformation and transmission of texts and meanings in and across cultures. The novel and the film are two modes of representation based on different aesthetic tools, but both are capable of articulating narrative discourses. Literary naturalism, within the Hispanic context, has traditionally been read as a graphic realist school or movement linked predominantly to late nineteenth century literary production. The essays in Au Naturel: (Re)Reading Hispanic Naturalism—written by scholars from different generations, nationalities and ideological backgrounds—propose a major revisionist contribution to the study of Hispanic naturalism. Based on a theoretical proposal that re-semanticizes naturalismo as a diachronic counter-metanarrative phenomenon that transcends the chronological and geographic limitations imposed by traditional criticism on naturalism, the collection provides new readings of traditional naturalist fare as well as re-readings of works that have not been read, within the bounds of conventional criticism, as naturalist.
