Book Description

Book Description
Until now, there was virtually no literature available on this dual problem of physical disability and substance abuse. Substance Abuse and Physical Disability brings together these topics to provide readers with the vital information necessary to understand the significant challenges, risks, and threats that substance abuse and chemical dependency pose for the physically disabled. This seminal book provides the materials needed by professionals to understand the context of substance abuse in the lives of persons with disabilities, identify chemical dependency problems, and implement effective treatment strategies. Covering an important but often overlooked area, this book enables rehabilitation professionals to treat their substance abusing clients more effectively. This resourceful book is divided into three sections, discussing the context, issues, and problems of substance abuse; causes, types, and prevalence of substance abuse; and assessment, treatment, and prevention issues. This thorough coverage includes chapters addressing medical complications and prescription medication issues in rehabilitation; pain management; consequences of alcohol and drug problems following physical disability; and a review of assessment and treatment issues to help rehabilitation workers select chemical dependency treatment programs. Chapters also describe the establishment of a chemical dependence program at a facility for the physically disabled, and strategies to engage families in chemical dependency treatment. Full of helpful, practical information, Substance Abuse and Physical Disability is an invaluable guide for all rehabilitation professionals as well as physicians, nurses, psychologists, vocational rehabilitation counselors, and allied health therapists. Substance abuse counselors and chemical dependency professionals will find much useful information on helping persons who have mobility, sensory, and communication limitations.

Book Description
"Children vary in their response to the death of a loved one. Some children develop relatively few symptoms or problems, while others face significant or prolonged symptoms, such as posttraumatic stress disorder or anxiety. Similarly, children vary in their circumstances and preferences. Thus, clinicians who work with bereaved children must customize interventions to meet the specific needs of each individual child. This book presents Integrated Grief Therapy for Children--an evidence-based model for treating bereaved children that draws extensively on cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and narrative approaches to therapy. The model shows clinicians how to assess the needs of bereaved children, treat common distressing symptoms (depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and behavioral problems), and address the grief itself while fostering resilience. Because emotional and behavioral problems following grief are manifested in different ways, the model allows for flexibility based on the age, symptom presentation, and needs of the child. And because the inclusion of a surviving parent or caregiver is critical to working with grieving children, the model involves the parent in the interventions. With a thorough literature review on bereavement in childhood, extensive case examples and dialogues to illustrate therapeutic techniques, and over 20 activity handouts that therapists can photocopy and use in sessions, this book provides everything needed to treat bereaved children"--Publicity materials. Book Description
In Psychiatric Power, the fourth volume in the collection of his groundbreaking lectures at the Collège de France, Michel Foucault addresses and expands upon the ideas in his seminal Madness and Civilization, sketching the genealogy of psychiatry and of its characteristic form of power/knowledge. Madness and Civilization undertook the archeology of the division according to which, in Western Society, the madman found himself separated from the sane. That book ends with the medicalization of madness at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Psychiatric Power continues this discourse up to the end of the nineteenth century, and the double "depsychiatrization" of madness, now dispersed between the neurologist and the psychoanalyst. Presented in a conversational tone, Psychiatric Power brings fresh access and light to the work of one of the past century's preeminent thinkers.
