Book Description
This book explores how public organizations and not-for-profit organizations (NPO) can be more collaborative, innovative and effective in solving social issues in both developing and developed countries. “Social innovation,” led by social entrepreneurs and/or social enterprises, emerged in the late 1990s, and spread in 2000s. As the West faced management failures, demand increased for corporations to take on more social responsibility. Based on intensive research on social innovation processes at the municipal and the community level in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan, the book analyses the factors that affected the most effective and efficient social innovations.

Book Description
Alexander Schieffer and Ronnie Lessem introduce a groundbreaking development framework and process to address the most burning issues that humanity faces. While conventional top-down, outside-in development has reached a cul-de-sac, a new, integral form of development is emerging around the world. Integral Development uniquely articulates this emergent approach, and invites us to fully participate in this process. The integral approach has been researched and framed over decades of in-depth experience in transformative development education and practice all over the world. It uniquely combines four mutually reinforcing perspectives: nature and community; culture and spirituality; science, systems and technology; and enterprise and economics. Conventional development theory and practice has prioritized the latter two perspectives, neglecting the former two. This has caused massive imbalances in today’s world. The four interconnected perspectives allow for a transformative and integrated engagement with core development issues in a way that is locally relevant and globally resonant. Throughout, the practical impact of Integral Development is brought to life through highly innovative cases from around the globe, drawing on the authors` first-hand experience. This makes the book a living demonstration of the power of this pioneering approach. Integral Development shows how individual, organizational and societal developments need to be interconnected to release a society’s full potential. It shifts the responsibility for large-scale development from often-distant experts and organizations to each individual, community, enterprise and institution within the society. It is essential reading - and a call to action - for everyone concerned with the current state of local and global development.

Book Description
The progress of broadband ICT is having a big impact on individual lifestyles and corporate activities. For corporate strategy, broadband use goes beyond improving management efficiency to contributing to enhancing customer services and developing new markets. In addition, the shape of corporate organizations and their behavior is changing along with recent changes in the business environment and development of broadband networks. It will become increasingly important for future business strategies to go beyond resources limited by business units within conventional corporate organizations to take positive initiatives with knowledge and competences outside the company as well as with the dynamic use of ICT, through such means as external strategic alliances, virtual corporations, mergers and acquisitions, and outsourcing. This book describes that the full utilization of ICT based on fixed and mobile wireless broadband communication platforms supports managerial speed and excellence, while making it possible to formulate new business models. Chapter 1 describes business process innovations and new e-business that activates the concepts and technology of video-based information networks (VIN) based on the leading broadband and wireless technologies of multimedia communication networks. Dynamic activities with VIN as a future network strategy support tool will enable business innovation through strengthening corporate competitiveness and enhancing customer services. Chapter 2 considers theoretical frameworks related to "ICT dynamic capability" for companies that have employed ICT. "ICT dynamic capability" comprises the three elements of context architecture, boundaries consolidation, and ICT application capabilities, and is discussed from the viewpoint of the new knowledge creation process. The interaction among actors' dynamic use of VIN tools and the community knowledge creating cycle simultaneously enhances knowledge effectiveness and creativity. Chapter 3 goes on to consider the decision-making process that introduced and activated VIN tools within the company, aimed at the acquisition of ICT dynamic capability, from the perspective of a strategy-making process. Chapter 4 demonstrates community management frameworks exploiting VIN in the company through in-depth case study. The top-down approach through the innovative leadership of community leaders who comprehensively manage the business community spread within and outside the company will enable the dynamic use of ICT by community members. In Chapter 5, looking at the creation of business linking industry and academia, the author considers cases of VIN development through a bottom-up approach involving members in the strategic community, and shows analysis from the viewpoint of ICT dynamic capability created from dynamic interaction of context and knowledge with customers who have crossed the organizational boundaries among industries. In Chapter 6, through emergent strategies for small and medium-sized companies, the book justifies new knowledge in-house after its creation from a trial-and-error process using a bottom-up approach, and the author looks at the feelings and behaviour of actors undertaking to improve in-house productivity and customer services as a strategy for the entire company. In Chapter 7, the author takes up a case study of Sony, and looks at an example of VIN tools adoption by means of Sony’s deliberate strategy using a top-down approach. Moreover, learning from Sony’s trial & error method, the author considers the process of a successful VIN adoption from a bottom-up approach through emergent strategies centered on worksite organization. In Chapter 8 the author considers successful case studies of VIN adoption by large companies. The author considers the processes that productively resolve internally generated friction and conflict and transform corporate culture through the use of both top-down and bottom-up approaches. Finally, in Chapter 9, the book provides new insights derived from the case studies and theoretical and managerial implications related to new knowledge creation by ICT dynamic capability. Bridging theory and practice and providing international scope, this book will be invaluable to academics and students with an interest in business, management, ICT, and to managers in high-tech industries.

Book Description
Today, unprecedented emphasis is being placed on research as key motor for advancing the knowledge society and its offspring, the knowledge economy. Consequently, “research on the state of research” has moved high on the priority agendas for governments, for their specialized agencies and bodies devoted to this area, and for higher education institutions. Against this background, the central premise of the 2006 Global Colloquium of the UNESCO Forum for Higher Education Research and Knowledge “Universities as Centres of Research and Knowledge Creation—An Endangered Species” was that research is a key ingredient in the institutional identity of universities and an indispensable prerequisite for a successful programme of teaching and public service. Based on contributions to this Colloquium authors from twenty countries from all regions of the world analyse aspects related to the research function of universities. This book primarily addresses the variety and gaps in higher education across the globe, concentrating on the challenges to transitional and developing countries. It addresses the related issues of research capacity, research productivity, and research relevance and utility. Research capacity appears as a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for research productivity; and research productivity must be assessed in terms of utility and relevance. This volume provides a global range of insights both for policy makers and for higher education and research communities.

Book Description
The idea of corporations exercising corporate social responsibility has spread from the West and is now firmly embedded in Asian countries and in Asian corporations. The latest trend in corporate social responsibility, evident also in Asia, is for corporations to apply corporate social responsibility to local communities and to those at the bottom of the social hierarchy. This book explores corporations’ social responsibility engagement with local communities in a range of Asian countries. It provides examples of corporate social responsibility in a wide range of industrial sectors, focuses extensively on "social enterprises" and on governments’ and corporations’ schemes to encourage them, considers how relations with employees and with local workforces fit into the pattern of corporate social responsibility, and discusses the question as to how far corporations engage with local communities as a way of developing new markets for their products.
