Phase II: Understanding Factors Related to Prostate, Lung, and Colorectal Screening Among African American Men
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:

Pages : 0
Book Description
The study aims were to: (1) use a randomized trial to evaluate an ongoing innovative intervention designed to facilitate screening adherence among African American men aged 55(+) years in the screening arm of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial and (2) develop a survey to assess perceptions of cancer screening among African American men. No statistically significant differences were found in age, education or income between the intervention (n=301) and control (n=300) groups. A total of 9,949 calls have been made to intervention group participants to address competing needs preventing screening adherence. Survey items found through a literature search were placed into the Preventive Health Model framework. Two focus groups were held to evaluate the developing survey. Focus group results show cognitive/psychological factors of fear and anxiety regarding cancer diagnosis and lack of knowledge about screening tests and benefits. Wives and children were cited as the most important social support and influence persons affecting screening behavior. Programmatic/systemic screening-related factors included a trusted health care provider and health insurance. A final survey was developed. Abstracts were submitted for presentation at two national meetings. Study findings could help African American men benefit from participation in prostate cancer research.

Book Description
This study inquired about the role of wives in prostate-related decision-making of their husbands. The data were focus groups with men with metastatic prostate cancer and their wives. The data analysis focused on the perceptions, attitude, and reported behaviors of wives associated with their husbands' decisions. Findings indicated the importance of including wives in studies on prostate cancer and that much information would be lost without the inclusion of the spouses' perspectives in attempts at understanding the meaning and process from prostate cancer diagnosis to choosing a treatment. Many men chose not to share with their spouses prostate-related problems that were experienced prior to diagnosis. Hence, further%studies need to investigate the influence third persons, and wives in particular, can have on preventive health-related decision-making.

African American Men in the PLCO Trial: Developing and Testing Methods to Increase Retention
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:

Pages : 0
Book Description
The specific aims of this randomized trial are to evaluate the efficacy of an innovative intervention in retaining African American men in the screening arm of the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial at the Henry Ford Health System site, and to develop a culturally appropriate measurement instrument to assess perceptions of cancer screening. The study population consists of African American men aged 55 and older living in southeastern Michigan. Information related to community resources is shared with the study participants. Thus, competing needs that may prevent them from adhering to their PLCO screening tests are addressed. No statistically significant differences were found in education or age between the intervention group (n=3O1) and the control group (n=3OO). In terms of the measurement instrument, a literature search on African Americans' perceptions of cancer screening was conducted, potential survey items were placed into a theoretical framework, and a focus group was held. An abstract documenting the design of the study was submitted for presentation at the 2000 American Association for Cancer Research Conference. The findings of this study can be used to help African American men benefit from the positive aspects of participation in prostate cancer research.
