Book Description
Reciting the Goddess presents the first critical study of the Svasthanivratakatha (SVK), a sixteenth-century Hindu narrative textual tradition. The extensive SVK manuscript tradition offers a rare opportunity to observe the making of a specific, distinct Hindu religious tradition. Jessica Vantine Birkenholtz argues that the SVK serves as a lens through which we can observe the creation of modern 'Hinduism' in the Himalayas, as the text both mirrored and informed key moments in the self-conscious creation of Nepal as the 'world's only Hindu kingdom' in the late medieval and early modern period. Birkenholtz mines the literary historiography that is contained within the SVK text itself, chronicling the text's literary and narrative development as well as the development of the Svasthani goddess tradition. She outlines the process whereby the SVK gradually transformed into a Purana text, and became a critical source for Nepali Hindu belief and identity. She also examines the elusive character of the goddess Svasthani whose identity is tied to the pan-Hindu goddess tradition, and the representation of women in the SVK and the ways in which the text influenced local and regional debates on the ideal of Hindu womanhood. Reciting the Goddess presents Nepal's celebrated SVK as a micro-level illustration of the powerful ways in which people, place, and literature intersect to produce new ideas and concepts of identity and place, even in a historically non-literate culture.

Book Description
In the mountains of Nepal, a young boy, Ashok, flees Maoist violence in his village. Sadananda, an old Kathmandu holy man, takes him in and teaches him how to survive in the city. Five years pass, and Andrew, an aid worker, is accidentally given a cryptic, confidential letter in his Kathmandu hotel. He quickly becomes the target of menacing figures, including Merrick, an urbane, dangerous Englishman. As the hunt intensifies, Andrew meets Ashok and his English friend, Kate, who take him to Sadananda for advice. While he considers the problem, the old sadhu distracts them with tales of the ancient Himalayas: how a primeval lake became the Kathmandu Valley; how the Buddha’s disciple overcame murderous robbers in the Great Forest; and how a Kathmandu prince escaped Nepal to forge an alliance with the king of Tibet and regain his throne. But when Ashok goes missing, Andrew is plunged into a frightening world of conspiracy and deception

Book Description
In the 1980s, Sasi finds herself playing the role of involuntary trailblazer, as the first Nepali woman to immigrate to her small community in Eastern Canada. There is no guidebook on how to navigate life, identity, and motherhood in this strange new place. Nor is she prepared for the triple whammy of racism, sexism, and ageism that confronts her as she seeks to gain a footing in the workplace and society. Weaving together personal recollections with those of family members, Sasi takes the reader on a journey that is strikingly honest, emotional, and ultimately hopeful.

Book Description
In early 2020, at the age of 21, leaving all modes of support behind, Mohul Bhowmick set out on a solo trip to Nepal. Out of this came Seeking Kathmandu, which is an acclaimed piece of travel literature. Resplendent with tales of delight and hardship as well as the magnanimity and generosity of his hosts, this book speaks in agonising detail about the pleasures and pains of solo travel. Painting pictures with his flawless lyrical language and deep metaphysical examinations, Bhowmick takes the reader on an extremely pleasing visual journey of the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, from the finesse of Kathmandu to the squalor of Bhaktapur and the grace of Pokhara. This is a travelogue like no other, albeit it being the author's first venture into non-fiction after three successful books of poetry.
