Book Description
The battle my father led was supposed to be a rescue mission. It was anything but. It was an ambush I didn’t know about until it was over. A war that no one walked away from. Except my little sister. I was forced to take on the role of the Alpha of our pack. I was eighteen. After the dust settled, our pack was nearly destroyed. Decimated. I was broken. In far more ways than losing my parents. A wolf’s connection to the rest of his pack is strong. But that of an Alpha? The pack is our responsibility. Losing anyone takes a toll on us that’s indescribable. It’s like losing a limb. My job is to avenge my pack; my parents. I lost my entire family. I don’t have time for stupid things like mates. My wolf doesn’t agree. As soon as he caught Kaia’s scent when my dead mother, who is one of my spirit guides, called me to the edge of our territory when she was in danger, that was it. For both of us, much to my dismay. But she’s human. There’s no way in all of the Hells I’ll ever accept her as my mate. Ever. Shifters and humans don’t mate. It’s a rule I put in place years ago. A rule to protect humans from suffering the same fate my human father and human sister-in-law did. On the day I plan to reject her as my mate to the Moon Goddess, hidden secrets are revealed that throw us both into chaos and threaten to consume our entire world. Now, I face the biggest decision of my life. Do I give in to the call of my wolf’s heart, or lead us both down a path of destruction neither of us will ever come back from? Content Warning: - Paranormal Wolf/Shifter Romance - Kidnapping - Dark Themes - Age Gap

Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 154
Book Description
Gold Medal Winner, 2019 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards, Pre-Teen Fiction E-Book Finalist, 2019 Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People A powerful and poignant story of two young girls' friendship, family, loss, and loyalty, set in 1940s Saskatchewan. “Beryl Young's novel Miles to Go is sparse, poetic and, at times, perfectly heart wrenching. It subtly captures the coming of age of two young prairie girls. The beauty of this story is in the little things, the life things. In short: it’s wonderful.”—Arthur Slade, Governor General’s Award–winning author of Dust “This is a tender story about two friends dealing with tragic personal loss. Beryl Young captures a snapshot of small town life in the 1940s. Lovingly told, realistic, sad, and, like life, often very funny.”—Harriet Zaidman, teacher-librarian and writer, Winnipeg, Manitoba Miles to Go is the story of a friendship between two twelve-year-old girls in a small Saskatchewan town. In the spring of 1948, each girl faces a heavy personal loss and challenges that threaten their friendship. Through a hard few months the girls learn the meaning of loyalty and the value of keeping a promise. Loosely based on the author's own experiences of growing up in rural Saskatchewan, this book's timeless themes and authentic emotion will speak to young readers.

Ernest Cole: House of Bondage
Author:
Publisher: Aperture
ISBN: 9781597115339
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
One of the frankest books ever done on South Africa. -Robert Cromie, Chicago Tribune First published in the US in 1967 and in Britain in 1968, House of Bondage presented images from South Africa that shocked the world. The young African photographer Ernest Cole had left his country at 26 to find an audience for his stunning exposure of the system of racial dominance known as apartheid. In 185 photographs, Cole's book showed from the vantage point of the oppressed how the system closely regulated and controlled the lives of the black majority. He saw every aspect of this oppression with a searching eye and a passionate heart. House of Bondage is a milestone in the history of documentary photography, even though it was immediately banned in South Africa. In a Chicago Tribune review, Robert Cromie described it as "one of the frankest books ever done on South Africa--with photographs by a native of that country who would be most unwise to attempt to return for some years." Cole died in exile in 1990 as the regime was collapsing, never knowing when his portrait of his homeland would finally find its way home. Not until the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg mounted enlarged pages of the book on its walls in 2001 were his people able to view these pictures, which are as powerful and provocative today as they were 50 years ago. Ernest Cole was born near Pretoria, South Africa, in 1940. Leaving school at 17 to become a photographer, he secured staff jobs and freelance assignments for newspapers and magazines for black people--honing his skills with a correspondence course from the New York Institute of Photography. Inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson's book The People of Moscow, in 1960 Cole embarked on a project to document the lives of his people, which resulted in House of Bondage.
