Book Description
The idea of modern terrorism and the practice of terrorist violence emerged in Britain’s first colony, Ireland, before spreading through imperial networks to South and East Asia, to Africa, and to the Middle East. Thus, empire not only birthed terror, but also made it global. And the sheer spread, diversity, and longevity of that empire produced multiple stages in the evolution of terrorism from rural intimidation to urban guerilla warfare to homegrown radicalism. Indeed, today’s global terror challenges—the ethics of counter-terrorism, the threats of Islamist and international terrorism, and the rise of homegrown right-wing extremism—all have roots in colonialism.

Enthusiasm and nerves are running high on board the nuclear-powered Coast Guard cutter Broadsword as the crew prepares for their maiden voyage. Confident that they have prepared and trained for every possible contingency during their deployment, they are eager to get underway. But a new storm brewing in the Gulf of Mexico is about to sweep these sailors into truly uncharted waters. As the winds settle, chaos reigns on the command deck. Instruments are malfunctioning, and the crew struggles to make sense of nonsensical readings. The only explanation seems impossible, but soon its one they have no choice but to accept as their new reality. They have been transported back to the Mid-Cretaceous, a voyage of nearly 92 million years into the planets past. Its a time of unrecognizable peril and challenge for the crew, where incredible beasts control land, sea, and air. A warm and humid Earth presents a changing landscape of geologic instability, super storms, and shifting continents. Lead by the enigmatic JD Stoner, the ragtag crew races to understand their new situation and find a way home. Survival is far from guaranteed in an environment rife with danger that none of them is equipped to handle. Can a group of twenty-first-century humans survive long enough to make it back to their own time?

Book Description
More than 200,000 words of great crime and suspense fiction Each year, Ed Gorman and Martin H. Greenberg, editors of The World's Finest Mystery and Crime Stories, have reached farther past the boundaries of the United States to find the very best suspense from the world over. In this third volume of their series they have included stories from Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom as well as, of course, a number of fine stories from the U.S.A. Among these tales are winners of the Edgar Award, the Silver Dagger Award of the British Crime Writers, and other major awards in the field. In addition, here are reports on the field of mystery and crime writing from correspondents in the U.S. (Jon L. Breen), England (Maxim Jakubowski), Canada (Edo Van Belkom), Australia (David Honeybone), and Germany (Thomas Woertche). Altogether, with nearly 250,000 words of the best short suspense published in 2001, this bounteous volume is, as the Wall Street Journal said of the previous year's compilation, "the best value-for-money of any such anthology." The A-to-Z of the authors should excite the interest of any mystery reader: Robert Barnard • Lawrence Block • Jon L. Breen • Wolfgang Burger • Lillian Stewart Carl • Margaret Coel • Max Allan Collins • Bill Crider • Jeffery Deaver • Brendan DuBois • Susanna Gregory • Joseph Hansen • Carolyn G. Hart • Lauren Henderson • Edward D. Hoch • Clark Howard • Tatjana Kruse • Paul Lascaux • Dick Lochte • Peter Lovesey • Mary Jane Maffini • Ed McBain • Val McDermid • Marcia Muller • Joyce Carol Oates • Anne Perry • Nancy Pickard • Bill Pronzini • Ruth Rendell • S. Book Description
The headline of the Variety extra on October 27, 1926, proclaimed "Vitaphone1 Thrills L.A.!" Vitaphone, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. formed in association with Western Electric, was one of the major producers of talkies, even though its sound-on-disc technology barely lasted four years. The Vitaphone features and shorts that have survived intact, or that have been so carefully restored, preserve much of the show business history that might otherwise have been lost with the industry's fast-paced advances in movie making. This book is a catalogue of Vitaphone features and shorts. The first section lists the features and shorts by release number. The New York productions (1926-1940) are listed first, followed by the West Coast productions (1927-1970). For shorts, the following particulars, if known and if applicable, are given: title, alternate title(s), instrumental and vocal selections performed on screen, composer(s) and performers of instrumental and vocal selections, release date and synopsis of the film, names of major cast members and directors, set information if two or fewer sets were used, and the amount paid to early performers. For features, entries list release dates, genre, and major cast members. The section on performers includes only those who appeared in shorts, listing dates and places of birth when known.

Book Description
On a fateful day in February 2002, campaign manager Clara Rojas accompanied longtime friend and presidential hopeful Ingrid Betancourt into an area controlled by the powerful leftist guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Armed with machine guns and grenades, the FARC took them hostage and kept them in the jungle for the next six years. After more than two years of captivity deep in the Colombian jungle, surrounded by jaguars, snakes, and tarantulas, miles from any town or hospital, Clara Rojas prepared to give birth in a muddy tent surrounded by heavily armed guerrillas. Her captors promised that a doctor would be brought to the camp to help her. But when Rojas went into labor and began to suffer complications, the only person on hand was a guerrilla wielding a kitchen knife. The guerrillas drugged Rojas with anesthetic while one of them slit open her abdomen. Her son, Emmanuel, was born by amateur cesarean section in April 2004. His survival was miraculous, but her joy was soon cut short when the FARC took him from her when he was only eight months old. For the next three years, Clara was given no information about him, but her desire to one day see him again kept her alive. In early 2008, Clara was finally liberated and reunited with her son—to whom this book is dedicated.
