Book Description
"Judaism is the exception that proves the rule. It has been a permanent force in the world's history. It is argued that Jewish ideals have exercised recurrent influence at all important crises."During the revolt against Hadrian an Assembly of Rabbis was held at Lydda. It was then decided that a Jew must yield his life rather than accept safety from a Roman power, if such conformity involved one of the three offenses: idolatry, murder, and unchastity (including incest and adultery). One of the most prominent Jewish intellectuals of the turn of the 20th century elucidates, in this succinct 1910 work, some of the distinguishing elements of Jewish practice and doctrine. A devout Jew himself, Abrahams brings a passion and an intensity to his writing not always found in works of religious scholarship, from his defense of mysticism to his penetrating discussion of the internal conflicts that threaten the faith's future. This is an excellent introduction to an often-misunderstood theology and culture.THE LEGACY FROM THE PASTRELIGION AS LAWARTICLES OF FAITHSOME CONCEPTS OF JUDAISMSOME OBSERVANCES OF JUDAISMJEWISH MYSTICISMESCHATOLOGYTHE SURVIVAL OF JUDAISMSELECTED LIST OF BOOKS ON JUDAISM

Book Description
THE LEGACY FROM THE PAST The aim of this little book is to present in brief outline some of the leading conceptions of the religion familiar since the Christian Era under the name Judaism. The word 'Judaism' occurs for the first time at about 100 B.C., in the Graeco-Jewish literature. In the second book of the Maccabees (ii. 21, viii. 1), 'Judaism' signifies the religion of the Jews as contrasted with Hellenism, the religion of the Greeks. In the New Testament (Gal. i. 13) the same word seems to denote the Pharisaic system as an antithesis to the Gentile Christianity. In Hebrew the corresponding noun never occurs in the Bible, and it is rare even in the Rabbinic books. When it does meet us, Jahaduth implies the monotheism of the Jews as opposed to the polytheism of the heathen.

Book Description
These twenty-five short chapters on Jewish Literature open with the fall of Jerusalem in the year 70 of the current era, and end with the death of Moses Mendelssohn in 1786. Thus the period covered extends over more than seventeen centuries. Yet, long as this period is, it is too brief. To do justice to the literature of Judaism even in outline, it is clearly necessary to include the Bible, the Apocrypha, and the writings of Alexandrian Jews, such as Philo. Only by such an inclusion can the genius of the Hebrew people be traced from its early manifestations
