Royal Jubilees
Author: Judith Millidge
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1782001530
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 65
Book Description
An illustrated history of British royal jubilee celebrations from George III to Elizabeth II. In 1809, thanksgiving ceremonies and feasts across Britain ushered George III into his fiftieth year as king. This was the first British celebration of a royal jubilee and set the tone for those that have followed since: processions, fireworks, construction of monuments, the striking of special coins and medals, and, of course, the sale of commemorative mugs. Queen Victoria marked her golden and diamond jubilees in 1887 and 1897 amid throngs of patriotic subjects from all over the world, and celebrations were also held for George V's silver jubilee in 1935. Following the festivities in 1977 and 2002, in 2012 Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch ever to celebrate her third jubilee, as she began her seventh decade on the throne. Judith Millidge describes the handful of British royal jubilees across 200 years, examines how they have been commemorated, their similarities and differences, and the myriad souvenir products that have accompanied them.

Chronology of the Hebrew Bible
Author: Robert P. Killian
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 147722193X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 380
Book Description
Mr. Robert Paul Killians avid interest in biblical chronology has a history of over seventy years. The Killian family had visited the Natural History Museum and the La Brea Tar Pit in the Los Angles area before his seventh birthday in June of 1939. Later, when the Killian family moved from Los Angles to Grants Pass, Oregon, in early 1945, Bob continued to indulge his curiosity in the study of the biblical stories. He had enlisted in the US Navy Reserve during his last year at Grants Pass High School, graduating with the Class of 50. He then volunteered for two years active duty in the US Navy in late summer of 1951 to serve in the Korean Conflict. When that war ended in June of 1953, he was honorably discharged and chose to serve with the Grants Pass Naval Reserve Program for a total of eight years. That choice resulted in his being awarded a second honorable discharge from the US Naval Reserve in 1958.

Russian Literary Politics and the Pushkin Celebration of 1880
Author: Marcus C. Levitt
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501731904
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 254
Book Description
In an event acknowledged to be a watershed in modern Russian cultural history, the elite of Russian intellectual life gathered in Moscow in 1880 to celebrate the dedication of a monument to the poet Alexander Pushkin, who had died nearly half a century earlier. Private and government forces joined to celebrate a literary figure, in a country in which monuments were usually dedicated to military or political heroes. In this richly detailed narrative history of the Pushkin Celebration and the developments that led up to it, Marcus C. Levitt explores the unique role of literature in nineteenth-century Russian intellectual life and puts Russian literary criticism, and Pushkin's posthumous reputation, into fresh perspective. Drawing on Soviet archival materials not readily available in the West, Levitt describes the preparations for the monument and the unfolding of the celebration. His sustained discussions of Turgenev's role and of Dostoevsky's famous "Pushkin Speech" shed new light on what was for both a culminating moment in their careers. In Levitt's view, the Pushkin Celebration represented the articulation of liberal, post-Emancipation hopes for an independent Russian intelligentsia and culture. His analysis of the problems faced by Russian liberalism illuminates the failure of concerted efforts to secure freedom of speech in nineteenth-century Russia.

The Jubilee Years
Author: Bruce Epperly
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1538145502
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
Taking inspiration from the Spanish word for retirement—jubilacion—veteran minister Bruce Epperly challenges and empowers clergy to see retirement as a celebration of new possibilities. Similar in spirit to the Jubilee year described in scripture, retirement can be a time of transformation and exploration, of freedom to try on new versions of yourself and new paths of service. In that spirit, clergy can embrace creative transformation in their relationships, neighborhoods, religious communities, and politics. No longer tethered to the politics and administrative duties of congregational leadership, they can now freely commit themselves to relational, intellectual, and spiritual growth. They can also focus on personal, community, and planetary healing and transformation. Retired clergy can become sages and wisdom givers sharing their insights and energy with seminarians and novice pastors, congregations, and communities. Bringing together the fruits of conversations with more than 100 retired clergy, theological reflection, and spiritual practices, this text provides a way forward for clergy considering retirement and retired clergy. Based on interviews from persons from diverse denominations, theological perspectives, and ethnic and racial backgrounds, this book garners wisdom from pastors on their retirement journeys, from personal preparation and public announcement to first steps following retirement and long-term adventures.
