Prehistoric Journey - The First Expeditions
Author: D.L. Narrol
Publisher: Fiction4All
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 171
Book Description
Book 1 of Colin Limmerick's adventures. Colin Limmerick lives a double life. His rugged good looks and merchant fishing trade don't coincide with his desire to continue his higher education at a London university. His Irish working-class pirate-like behavior repulses his stuffy elitist professor making it difficult for his research to be taken seriously. Looks are deceiving when his research idea to prove Darwin by demonstrating the great Irish deer megaloceros giganticus was sexually selected against. He meets physicist, Dr. Sasha Dimitrikov, an eccentric escapee from the Russian Revolution, who has developed a time travel theory. The only way Limmerick can prove his research is to venture through a prehistory journey. In the midst of his frustration, he becomes enchanted with a lovely research student, Rosa, who he manages to woo with great difficulty. Her Edwardian prudish scowl continuously pushes him away, despite her stimulated attraction for him. She mistakenly tosses Limmerick aside and is lured into Dr. Dimitrikov's arms. This occurs when the three scholars are on the first prehistoric expedition 10,000 years in the past in search of megaloceros. They encounter a prehistoric environment that is too unknown and unmanageable for modern people to survive. They are faced with several challenges but manage to conquer by survival of the fittest. Limmerick's research on prehistoric evolution is greatly admired by a foreign professor from India, Dr. Sharma, who introduces his voluptuous daughter, Amoli. She falls instantly in love with Limmerick where he is at first reluctant but succumbs to her seduction dance not realizing the clash of the cultures that lie ahead. At the same time, he is faced with a new challenge recognizing the first expedition left unexpected damage. He must time travel again in order to mend the chaotic mess he left the first time. He and Dr. Dimitrikov are faced with another prehistoric expedition, which is more life threatening than the first especially when they are violently confronted by a family of Neanderthals. His excessive drinking carries through the novel but heightens with his destructive behavior when he finally comes to terms knowing two 20th century men can't play God and that he must fight for what he truly loves.

Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History
Author: Scott Andrew Selby
Publisher: Sterling Publishing
ISBN:
Category : True Crime
Languages : en
Pages : 397
Book Description
"Tells the story with the gripping pace of a true-crime 'Ocean's Eleven.'" The New York Post • "Like a diamond, this true-life caper is clear, colorful, and brilliant." Publishers Weekly ★Starred Review★ The Antwerp Diamond Center was one of the most secure buildings in the world. With hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of diamonds stored in its subterranean vault, it had to be. Located in the heart of Belgium's ultra-secure Antwerp Diamond District, it benefited from two police stations, armed patrols, extensive video surveillance, and vehicle barriers securing an area where 80 percent of the world's diamonds traded hands. But on February 15, 2003, a band of skilled Italian thieves — fronted by the charming Leonardo Notarbartolo, who spent over two years clandestinely casing the building — subverted every one of the Diamond Center's defenses and made off with a record amount of loot. Experts estimate they got away with nearly half a billion dollars in diamonds, cash and other valuables. They'd pulled off the biggest heist in history--everybody loves diamonds and they now had more than any thief before them. The robbers did it with stealth and smarts; no one was hurt or even threatened during what was quickly labeled the largest diamond heist in history. The bandits — members of a group of professional thieves known as "The School of Turin" — used cunning in lieu of violence, successfully evading security cameras, thwarting an array of electronic sensors, and penetrating a vault protected by a double-locked foot-thick steel door. Even when the police zeroed in on who committed the crime, how it was done remained a mystery, like something out of a heist movie or TV show. Flawless is a fast-paced global scavenger hunt uncovering the truth behind the daring Valentine's Day weekend heist. Tracking clues, sources, and documents throughout Europe — from seedy cafés in Turin, Italy to sleek diamond offices in Antwerp, Belgium — authors Scott Selby and Greg Campbell retrace Notarbartolo's careful discovery of the building's security flaws. They recreate the heist and its aftermath — detailing how the thieves brilliantly neutralized each element of the security protecting the Diamond Center's vault while inviting the readers into the secretive world of diamonds and diamond dealing. The result is a thrilling ride through the better-than-fiction heist of the century. "Fans of caper books and movies will be in seventh heaven." Booklist ★Starred Review★

Koh-i-Noor
Author: William Dalrymple
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1635570778
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 307
Book Description
From the internationally acclaimed and bestselling historians William Dalrymple and Anita Anand, the first comprehensive and authoritative history of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, arguably the most celebrated jewel in the world. On March 29, 1849, the ten-year-old leader of the Sikh kingdom of the Punjab was ushered into the magnificent Mirrored Hall at the center of the British fort in Lahore, India. There, in a formal Act of Submission, the frightened but dignified child handed over to the British East India Company swathes of the richest land in India and the single most valuable object in the subcontinent: the celebrated Koh-i-Noor diamond, otherwise known as the Mountain of Light. To celebrate the acquisition, the British East India Company commissioned a history of the diamond woven together from the gossip of the Delhi Bazaars. From that moment forward, the Koh-i-Noor became the most famous and mythological diamond in history, with thousands of people coming to see it at the 1851 Great Exhibition and still more thousands repeating the largely fictitious account of its passage through history. Using original eyewitness accounts and chronicles never before translated into English, Dalrymple and Anand trace the true history of the diamond and disperse the myths and fantastic tales that have long surrounded this awe-inspiring jewel. The resulting history of south and central Asia tells a true tale of greed, conquest, murder, torture, colonialism, and appropriation that shaped a continent and the Koh-i-Noor itself.
