Book Description
Only appearances remain: why not raise them to the level of a style? --E. M. Cioran This fully illustrated, artist-designed catalogue features the most recent work of New York-based Josephine Meckseper, including her work for the 2006 Whitney Biennial. The artist suggests that our desire for luxury goods and fashion is induced by media-driven ruling regimes, and comes to the conclusion that partisan politics are just another status symbol. Radicalism quickly morphs into radical chic, which is just one more object to be fetishized and sold in a museum-gallery-boutique that samples utopian dreams ranging from the communists to the hippies. "In Meckseper's work, politics becomes a style, and commitment an object to be displayed in a chic display cabinet, suggestive of those in museums and ethnographic societies," write the curators of the 2005 Lyon Biennale. "Meckseper explores the questionable links between images of political news, the fashion industry and advertising." Contributors Sylvère Lotringer

Book Description
This book is the result of four years of collaborative work that focused on topics of affect, the return of history, ecology, and art and its markets in today's power law-based economies. These themes triggered not only the development of new artworks but also gave rise to reflexive discourses and discussions surrounding art theory, philosophy, sociology, and economics. The book contains a visual documentation of a number of group shows - which also included the works of winners of the Daniel Frese Prize - at Agathenburg Castle, Halle für Kunst Lüneburg, Kunstraum of Leuphana University of Lüneburg, and Kunstverein Springhornhof. The contributions by critics, curators, theoreticians, and scientists include essays and in-depth conversations.

Book Description
A major group exhibition of ninety nine artists based in the United States, '99 Cents or Less' addresses Detroit?s ongoing economic crisis and its 2013 bankruptcy?the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in the history of the United States. Four years after a federal judge approved Detroit?s bankruptcy-exit plan the city?s financial present and future are still in flux. This exhibition is a reflection on the realities of a city that was once one of the country?s wealthiest and most diverse. Speaking to Detroit?s place as a global industrial powerhouse by using materials from 99 cent stores, '99 Cents or Less' hopes to make the connection between past, present, and future centers of production, and point to ways that artists can address how mass production has changed and will continue to change and evolve. As the consumer?s relationship with their everyday items has changed, so has the application and approach that artists take when incorporating these items in their work. 00Exhibition: Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, USA (19.05. - 06.08.2017).

Book Description
Vitrines and glass cabinets are familiar apparatuses that have in large part defined modern modes of display and visibility, both within and beyond the museum. They separate objects from their contexts, group them with other objects, both similar and dissimilar, and often serve to reinforce their intrinsic or aesthetic values. The vitrine has much in common with the picture frame, the plinth and the gallery, but it has not yet received the kind of detailed art historical and theoretical discussion that has been brought to these other modes of formal display. The twelve contributions to this volume examine some of the points of origin of the vitrine and the various relations it brokers with sculpture, first in the Wunderkammer and cabinet of curiosities and then in dialog with the development of glazed architecture beginning with Paxton's Crystal Palace (1851). The collection offers close discussions of the role of the vitrine and shop window in the rise of commodity culture and their apposition with Constructivist design in the work of Frederick Kiesler; as well as original readings of the use of vitrines in Surrealism and Fluxus, and in work by Joseph Beuys, Paul Thek, Claes Oldenburg and his collaborators, Jeff Koons, Mike Kelley, Dan Graham, Vito Acconci, Damien Hirst and Josephine Meckseper, among others. Sculpture and the Vitrine also raises key questions about the nature and implications of vitrinous space, including its fronts onto desire and the spectacle; transparency and legibility; and onto ideas and practices associated with the archive: collecting, preserving and ordering.

Book Description
This volume investigates the cut-up as a contemporary mode of creativity and important global model of cultural production. The term cut-up thereby serves as an open container for a long list of terms and actions that describe the combination and reassembly of existing motifs, fragments, images and ideas from diverse and disconnected origins into newly synthesized entities. Refusing any disciplinary coherence, this book assembles texts from multifarious eras and origins. At the same time, the contributors share an urgency to question the dichotomy of original creation and derivative appropriation. In this way, the book itself is a cut-up of previously published essays and articles that in their proximity allow for multiple readings to arise. It aims to translate the topic into a wider societal discourse to serve as both a source of inspiration and a platform for critical reflection. Contributors Thom Bettridge, Marcus Boon, Nicolas Bourriaud, Lars Eckstein, Rachel Falconer, Lukas Feireiss, Joerg Koch, Jonathan Lethem, Lucas Mascatello, Paul D. Miller, Eduardo Navas, Tamar Shafrir, Robert Shore, Stacey Waite, and Jan Verwoert Copublished with Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam

Book Description
... Documents the critically lauded 2013 exhibition of the same name as well as continuing its ideas. Taking the historical account of philosopher René Descartes' creation of an animatronic effigy of his deceased young daughter as its foundation, the exhibition explored the traditional divide between conceptual and expressive works, those dealing with either the mind or the body.
