Book Description
On the 28th September 2016 the author, Jonathan Sharp was celebrating his 39th birthday. Sitting pretty with a successful business complete with all the trappings of a half decent lifestyle. Fast forward one year to his 40th birthday and he finds himself living penniless on the streets of Bogota, Colombia. How? Why? Cocaine of course. Prize Tw*t is a dark comedy/memoir about one man's struggle through life with the four big addictions - sex, drugs, booze and gambling. The book is a very honest and open account of one's life except for one important factor, there is no struggle in life. He's a lucky bastard who has pretty much loved and embraced every single second of his chaotic life. From the first high of the the first joint at the age of eleven and through a lifetime of depraved adventure, he has done it all. Right up to the point of losing the plot entirely, defrauding and stealing from his own company whilst high on crack cocaine and fleeing to South America just to buy yet more drugs. The book is a journey that covers many topics including graphic details of drug addiction, excessive drinking, prostitution, theft, euthanasia, mental illness, domestic violence, sexual abuse, marriage breakdown, fatherhood, gambling and all the fun and games that go along with such a crazy lifestyle. A true rags to riches story where one man can work his way out of the poverty stricken South Wales Valleys to find himself jet setting around the world getting paid to have a truly great time. Ultimately, his search for utopia and incessant hunt for booze, cocaine and women will always get the better of him. Whether that is getting fired from work, being ripped off by prostitutes, arrested by the cops or worse. This is a tale about a man who has been through it all. The book is a collection of stories brought together from nearly thirty years of excess, hooking readers in on a journey around the globe. Busting with content, most will be able to relate to many of the tales and say, "How embarrassing, I've done that". Others will want the author imprisoned for an eternity, or even longer. Either way, the book is happy, the book is sad but it hopes to assist and warn others that maybe it just might be the right time to slow down and take account of their actions before it's too late. Prize Tw*t goes to show that you can only ride your luck for so long. One can make a series of poor decisions and prove you can lose everything that is important to you in the blink of an eye - your children, your freedom and your life as you know it.

Works of Game
Author: John Sharp
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262029073
Category : Games & Activities
Languages : en
Pages : 157
Book Description
An exploration of the relationship between games and art that examines the ways that both gamemakers and artists create game-based artworks. Games and art have intersected at least since the early twentieth century, as can be seen in the Surrealists' use of Exquisite Corpse and other games, Duchamp's obsession with Chess, and Fluxus event scores and boxes—to name just a few examples. Over the past fifteen years, the synthesis of art and games has clouded for both artists and gamemakers. Contemporary art has drawn on the tool set of videogames, but has not considered them a cultural form with its own conceptual, formal, and experiential affordances. For their part, game developers and players focus on the innate properties of games and the experiences they provide, giving little attention to what it means to create and evaluate fine art. In Works of Game, John Sharp bridges this gap, offering a formal aesthetics of games that encompasses the commonalities and the differences between games and art. Sharp describes three communities of practice and offers case studies for each. “Game Art,” which includes such artists as Julian Oliver, Cory Arcangel, and JODI (Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans) treats videogames as a form of popular culture from which can be borrowed subject matter, tools, and processes. “Artgames,” created by gamemakers including Jason Rohrer, Brenda Romero, and Jonathan Blow, explore territory usually occupied by poetry, painting, literature, or film. Finally, “Artists' Games”—with artists including Blast Theory, Mary Flanagan, and the collaboration of Nathalie Pozzi and Eric Zimmerman—represents a more synthetic conception of games as an artistic medium. The work of these gamemakers, Sharp suggests, shows that it is possible to create game-based artworks that satisfy the aesthetic and critical values of both the contemporary art and game communities.

The Emotional Calendar
Author: John R. Sharp
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 1429974702
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 288
Book Description
A leading Harvard psychiatrist reveals how our emotional lives are profoundly shaped by the seasons, and how to recognize our own seasonal patterns and milestones In two decades of psychiatry practice, John R. Sharp has worked with many people who experienced the same emotional distresses at specific times of the year—a young woman who became depressed before Thanksgiving, a middle-aged man who felt anxious about making his summer travel plans, people who made uncharacteristically extreme decisions as spring approached. In The Emotional Calendar, Sharp reveals how environmental, psychological, and cultural forces profoundly affect the way we feel, and how the enduring effects of personal anniversaries can influence our moods and behavior year after year. Sharp also illustrates a wide range of individual responses to cultural phenomena: some people feel anxious at the start of a new school year or are undone by the prospect of tax season while others are buoyed by the start of a sports season. Sharp shows us how to recognize the milestones on our own emotional calendars, providing guidance for how to break stifling patterns and remedy destructive moods. This empathetic and deeply resonant book will help readers reach an emotional balance for the years ahead.

Sliceforms
Author: John Sharp
Publisher: Tarquin Group
ISBN: 9781899618064
Category : Geometrical models
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Sliceform modelling is a technique which lies happily on the borders between art and mathematics. The models are made from intersecting sets of parallel planes which slot together in a clever way to generate interesting three-dimensional surfaces. In the fully open position the planes are at right angles and the surfaces are correctly defined, but all the models fold flat in two different ways, making them easy to store until they are wanted next time. When popped up, the play of light and shade on the planes creates objects of great beauty. The book includes a varied collection of eight models to cut out and make and a detailed explanation of how to generate the slices for models of your own. See also Surfaces - Explorations with Sliceforms for more detailed explanations and more templates.

Iterate
Author: John Sharp
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 026203963X
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 315
Book Description
How to confront, embrace, and learn from the unavoidable failures of creative practice; with case studies that range from winemaking to animation. Failure is an inevitable part of any creative practice. As game designers, John Sharp and Colleen Macklin have grappled with crises of creativity, false starts, and bad outcomes. Their tool for coping with the many varieties of failure: iteration, the cyclical process of conceptualizing, prototyping, testing, and evaluating. Sharp and Macklin have found that failure—often hidden, covered up, a source of embarrassment—is the secret ingredient of iterative creative process. In Iterate, they explain how to fail better. After laying out the four components of creative practice—intention, outcome, process, and evaluation—Sharp and Macklin describe iterative methods from a wide variety of fields. They show, for example, how Radiolab cohosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich experiment with radio as a storytelling medium; how professional skateboarder Amelia Bródka develops skateboarding tricks through trial and error; and how artistic polymath Miranda July explores human frailty through a variety of media and techniques. Whimsical illustrations tell parallel stories of iteration, as hard-working cartoon figures bake cupcakes, experiment with levitating office chairs, and think outside the box in toothbrush design (“let's add propellers!”). All, in their various ways, use iteration to transform failure into creative outcomes. With Iterate, Sharp and Macklin offer useful lessons for anyone interested in the creative process. Case Studies: Allison Tauziet, winemaker; Matthew Maloney, animator; Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, Radiolab cohosts; Wylie Dufresne, chef; Nathalie Pozzi, architect, and Eric Zimmerman, game designer; Andy Milne, jazz musician; Amelia Bródka, skateboarder; Baratunde Thurston, comedian; Cas Holman, toy designer; Miranda July, writer and filmmaker
