The bulk of the book is devoted to personal accounts, many of them moving, of the conditions endured by U.S. prisoners at the hands of the British, as preserved in journals or diaries kept by physicians, ships' captains, and the prisoners themselves. Of greater genealogical interest is the alphabetical list of 8,000 men who were imprisoned on the British vessel The Old Jersey, which the author copied from the papers of the British War Department and incorporated in the appendix to the work. Also included is a Muster Roll of Captain Abraham Shepherd's Company of Virginia Riflemen and a section on soldiers of the Pennsylvania Flying Camp who perished in prison, 1776-1777.

He married Anna Myers, daughter of Jacob Meyer, in 1774, in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They had eight children, 1775-1794. The family migrated to Franklin County, Virginia, ca. 1789; and moved to Botetourt County, Virginia, ca. 1804. Descendants lived in Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, California, and elsewhere.

Peter Scheibly/Shively (1742-1823), according to family tradition, was born in Switzerland, and immigrated to Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary War. He served with the Northampton County Miltia during the Revolutionary War. He married twice and was the father of eighteen children, born 1772-1805. The family moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania, to Tyrone Township, Cumberland County, now Perry County, Pennsylvania, in 1789. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania and elsewhere. Descendants spelled their surname Scheibly, Shively, Sheibley, and other variant spellings.
