Book Description
Sun Valley Lodge, run by Forrest Nunn and his wife Emily, with the assistance of their three children—Linda, a most attractive teenager, her twenty-four-year-old brother George, and small Carole—was in a nudist park which had an excellent reputation (except with a few people) and a most careful screening of members, so that sudden and murderous death had certainly never intruded upon it before. Though the body floating in the pool was nude, it was not the body of one of the members. The dead man was well-to-do, perhaps even prominent. But not only was he nude; his clothing was nowhere to be found; and someone had tried to prevent his being identified. And, oddly enough, no one came forward to identify him, or to report that a man like the dead man was missing. It was going to be a hard murder to solve. But Virgil Tibbs, moving expertly and patiently, was determined to solve it—and even to get used to carrying on his investigations in the midst of a nudist park, which added certain problems of its own. Tibbs is a detective who won friends and admirers immediately—and will go on to win more.

Book Description
Abortion. Homosexuality. Environmentalism. Evolution. Conservative positions on these topics are the current boundaries of mainstream Evangelical Christianity. But what if the theological arguments given by popular leaders on these “big four” were not quite as clear cut as they claim? Growing up as an evangelical Christian, Jonathan Dudley was taught that faith was defined by the total rejection of abortion, homosexuality, evolution, and environmentalism. But once he had begun studying biology and ethics, his views began to change and he soon realized that what he had been told about the Bible – and those four big issues – may have been misconstrued. Broken Words: The Abuse of Science and Faith in American Politics assesses the scientific and cultural factors leading evangelicals to certain stances on each issue, shows where they went wrong, and critically challenges the scriptural, ethical, and biological arguments issued by those leaders today. In Broken Words, Dudley applies the Bible and biology to challenge the fixed political dogmas of the religious right. Evangelicals are confronted for the first time from within their ranks on the extent to which faith has been corrupted by conservative politics, cultural prejudice and naive anti-intellectualism. A re-ordering of American Christianity is underway – and this book is an essential part of the conversation.

Book Description
Demonstrates how concepts of masculinity shaped the aesthetic foundations of literary naturalism A Man’s Game explores the development of American literary naturalism as it relates to definitions of manhood in many of the movement’s key texts and the aesthetic goals of writers such as Stephen Crane, Jack London, Frank Norris, Edith Wharton, Charles Chestnutt, and James Weldon Johnson. John Dudley argues that in the climate of the late 19th century, when these authors were penning their major works, literary endeavors were widely viewed as frivolous, the work of ladies for ladies, who comprised the vast majority of the dependable reading public. Male writers such as Crane and Norris defined themselves and their work in contrast to this perception of literature. Women like Wharton, on the other hand, wrote out of a skeptical or hostile reaction to the expectations of them as woman writers. Dudley explores a number of social, historical, and cultural developments that catalyzed the masculine impulse underlying literary naturalism: the rise of spectator sports and masculine athleticism; the professional role of the journalist, adopted by many male writers, allowing them to camouflage their primary role as artist; and post-Darwinian interest in the sexual component of natural selection. A Man’s Game also explores the surprising adoption of a masculine literary naturalism by African American writers at the beginning of the 20th century, a strategy, despite naturalism's emphasis on heredity and genetic determinism, that helped define the black struggle for racial equality

Book Description
The biblical story of Creation is all about liberation. The Genesis narrative of the Six Days leads to its climax and its purpose in the Seventh Day, the Sabbath. The Sabbath is centred around the aims of creating a community of freedom, of shared resources of land and wealth, and of the overcoming of exclusion, and these priorities are affirmed by Jesus in his reclaiming of the Sabbath. In Seven Days to Freedom, John Davies shows how this four-fold integrated process is essential to the biblical witness concerning Creation, and demonstrates how it is relevant to many contemporary concerns, including housing and land-tenure, slavery, climate-change, and education. Without such commitment to liberation, our understanding of Creation is weak and untrue to our Creator's purpose.

Book Description
A daughter can be a dangerous weapon in the battle for the throne of England Frances Grey harbored no dream of her children taking the throne. Cousin of the king, she knew the pitfalls of royalty and privilege. Better to marry them off, marry them well, perhaps to a clan like the Dudleys. Jane Dudley knew her husband was creeping closer to the throne, but someone had to take charge, for the good of the country. She couldn't see the twisted path they all would follow.
