Book Description
An exploration of religious conflicts in premodern urban India. Diverse peoples intermingled in the streets and markets of premodern Indian cities. This book considers how these diverse residents lived together and negotiated their differences. Which differences mattered, when and to whom? How did state actions and policies affect urban society and the lives of various communities? How and why did conflict occur in urban spaces? Through these questions, this book explores the histories of urban communities in the three cities of Ajmer, Nagaur, and Pushkar in Rajasthan, between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The focus of this study is on everyday life, contextualizing religious practices and conflicts by considering patterns of patronage and broader conflict patterns within society. The book examines various archival documents, from family and institutional records to state registers, and uses these documents to demonstrate the complex and sometimes contradictory ways religion intersected with politics, economics, and society. The author shows how many patronage patterns and processes persisted in altered forms, and how the robustness of these structures contributed to the resilience of urban spaces and society in precolonial Rajasthan.

Book Description
Various pre-modern successor states and other polities arose during the period of Mughal decline after 1707. Jaipur was a prime example of a polity which developed from a patriarchal, clan-dominated entity into a more consolidated, centralized domain during the period of its subservience to Mughal rule. Its internal administration was shaped according to the Mughal model; but elements of informal, patriarchal relationships, although eroded, remained. Further centralization and territorial expansion occurred after 1707 when its talented ruler, Raja Savai Jai Singh, reshaped the boundaries of the polity. He utilized his influence at Delhi as well as his appointments to the governorships of Malwa and Agra to gain long-term assignments and leases. He also meddled in regional politics to gain control over other Rajput polities and branches of his own clan. However, his adherence to traditional Rajput marital alliances was deleterious to Jaipur's future stability and maturation as a state. While Awadh and Hyderabad enjoyed several generations of innovation and consolidation, Jaipur "state," beset by debilitating civil war and decades of Maratha raids after the Raja's death, remained inchoate.

Book Description
This Atlas provides the main outlines of Islamic history from the immediate pre-Islamic period until the end of 1920, that is, before most parts of the Muslim world became sovereign nation states. Each map is accompanied by a text that contextualises, explains, and expands upon the map, and are fully cross-referenced. All of the maps are in full colour: 18 of them are double-page spreads, and 25 are single page layouts. This is an atlas of Islamic, not simply Arab or Middle Eastern history; hence it covers the entire Muslim world, including Spain, North, West and East Africa, the Indian sub-continent, Central Asia and South-East Asia. The maps are not static, in that they show transitions within the historical period to which they refer: for instance, the stages of the three contemporaneous Umayyad, Fatimid and ‘Abbasid caliphates on Map 10, or the progress of the Mongol invasions and the formation of the various separate Mongol khanates between 1200 and 1300 on Map 21. Using the most up to date cartographic and innovative design techniques, the maps break new ground in illuminating the history of Islam. Brought right up to date with the addition of a Postscript detailing The Islamic World since c.1900, a Chronology from 500 BCE to 2014, and additional endpaper maps illustrating The Spread of Islam through the Ages and The Islamic World in the 21st Century, the Atlas of Islamic History is an essential reference work and an invaluable textbook for undergraduates studying Islamic history, as well as those with an interest in Asian History, Middle East History and World History more broadly.
