Book Description
The energy dependence of the relative production rate of 3-jet events is studied in hadronic ee− annihilation events at centre of mass energies between 22 and 56 GeV, using the data of the JADE, MARK-II and AMY collaborations at PETRA, PEP and TRISTAN. Three jet events are defined by a jet finding algorithm which is closely related to the definition of resolvable jets used in O(.cap alpha./sub s/2) perturbative QCD calculations, where the relative production rate of 3-jet events is roughly proportional to the strong coupling strength, .cap alpha./sub s/. The observed production rates of 3-jet events decreases significantly with increasing centre of mass energy. The results, which are independent of fragmentation model calculations, can be directly compared to theoretically calculated jet production rates and are in good agreement with the QCD expectations of a running coupling strength, while the hypothesis of an energy independent coupling constant can be excluded with a significance of 5 standard deviations. Based on these results, the presented jet analysis also provides the possibility to detect first signs of the production of new and heavy particles in the early stage of data taking at SLC and LEP.

Book Description
The latest results on R, the ratio of the total cross section for production of multihadronic events to the muon pair production cross section, and inclusive distributions of hadrons from ee− annihilation in the center-of-mass energy range from 2.6 to 7.8 GeV are presented. The evidence for jet structure is reviewed. Inclusive distributions of hadrons in Feynman x, rapidity, and transverse momentum relative to the jet direction are studied. Particular emphasis is placed on the method used to measure these inclusive distributions and the biases which might result from this method.

Book Description
The Mark II detector in the ee− storage ring PEP at the Stanford Liner Accelerator Center (SLAC) is used to measure selected properties of hadronic events corresponding to produced bottom or charm quarks. Heavy flavor enrichment is accomplished by tagging events with prompt electrons or muons. Differences between bottom, charm and average jets are observed for momentum, transverse momentum, rapidity and jet mass distributions. A detailed study of the charged multiplicity of b- and c-enriched events finds the mean multiplicity of bottom and charm events to be 16.2 +- 0.5 +- 1.0 and 13.2 +- 0.5 +- 0.9, respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The corresponding 'non-leading' multiplicities of charged particles accompanying the pair of heavy hadrons are 5.2 +- 0.5 +- 0.9 for bottom, and 8.0 +- 0.5 +- 0.9 for charm. We find from these non-leading multiplicities that bottom and charm hadrons fragment with mean energy fractions of z/sub b/ = 0.79/sub -0.05//sup +0.10/ and z/sub c/ = 0.60/sub -0.11//sup +0.09/. These results confirm the expected hard fragmentation of heavy quarks and agree with previous measurements based on leptonic inclusive spectra and D* fragmentation. 48 refs., 29 figs.
