Book Description
"The I-400 'super submarine' was one of the most monstrous creations to emerge from the Second World War and, in its time, was considered to have been one of Japan's most secret weapons. At more than 400 feet long, weighing 5,223 tons submerged, carrying a crew of 200 and possessing a range of over 30,000 miles, the I-400 featured state-of-the-art Japanese radar and 'stealth' submarine technology and carried three Aichi M6A Seiran attack floatplanes. This book is the result of many years of meticulous research. The authors have traced and interviewed three of the original air crew assigned to fly the Seirans on their hazardous missions." "This story is also told using the first-hand accounts of former officers and crew of the I-400 as well as those American naval personnel who 'crewed' the vessel on its dramatic last voyage. The book contains hundreds of remarkable and often previously unpublished photographs showing external and internal views of the I-400, as well as of its hangar, aircraft, armament, and equipment."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
Prior to entering World War II, the Japanese Navy did a considerable planning and force development in preparation for a single “decisive battle” with the American fleet. The Japanese submarine force entered the war with highly trained crews operating some of the most capable submarines in the world. Even so, they accomplished little. This study will analyze the genesis and evolution of the technological basis of the Japanese submarine fleet before and during the war. Along with the technological evolution, it will also review the strategic and tactical evolution of the force. It will further analyze the employment of submarines as they apply to two major forms of naval warfare: guerre de course and guerre de main. While the entire study will use comparison with the American and German, the majority of the focus will be on the unique aspects of the Japanese employment of their submarines. These analyses will answer whether the Japanese submarine force would have been capable of influencing the results of major battles and the overall campaign in the Pacific Ocean. Could the Japanese submarine force have influenced the result of the war allowing it to end with a more favorable outcome for the Japanese?

Book Description
An extensive guide to Japan’s Naval Air Force Fighter Units and their ace pilots during conflicts in the 1930s and ‘40s, now in English. The book begins by looking at the land- and aircraft carrier-based navy fighter units and their operations from 1932 to 1945, as well as their history and achievements. This is followed with biographical details for all pilots who claimed eight or more aerial victories. The thorough appendix provides detailed listings of all pilots known to have claimed five or more victories (and thus considered to be “aces”), listings of the graduation from training of all Japanese Navy fighter pilots, and of fighter pilot casualties. Photographs, maps, and artist’s side-view drawings and paintings of aircraft relevant to each of the units are also included. This revised edition is a companion volume to Japanese Army Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces, 1931–1945.
