It would have been impossible, indeed, to have gathered up the thread of the various narratives we heard from the lips of sufferers and survivors, many of them of deeply mournful interest, and to have made them fully intelligible, without giving a general view of the course of martial law and some detail of its terrible incidents. But the publicity and discussion that have ensued, during the last twelvemonths, render this as unnecessary a task as it would have been inexpressibly painful to us. If any reasonable person remained, up to a few weeks ago, unsatisfied as to the true complexion of affaire during the Jamaica " reign of terror," (an expression we do not employ without substantial reasons, ) the letters of Lieutenant Brand have probably convinced him. There are, however, two or three general observations that seem important. First as to the area of the disturbed district. In Governor Eyre's first despatch, dated October 20th, but not forwarded till the 23rd or 24th, he says, "The outbreak commenced at Morant Bay, in St. Thomas in the East, and rapidly spread through the contiguous parishes." Elsewhere it is described as covering an area of sixty miles by thirty. The actual limits can be defined with considerable exactness, as extending from White Horses in the west to Long Bay and Elmwood in the east, a distance of thirty-four miles; and from Morant Bay in the south to Monklands in the north, sixteen miles; the whole being considerably within the boundaries of the single parish of St. Thomas in the East. Within this disturbed district there were very many persons and families in the towns, others...
