Book Description
A study was made of an iterative procedure for solving numerically the equations of steady viscous compressible flow. The method, based on a principle of similitude, was tested for the case of laminar two-dimensional hypersonic flow into a compression corner. The first two iterations gave an accurate description of the boundary layer, using less than 1 percent of the computer time required for time-marching integration of the equations for transient two-dimensional flow. However, the equations of the third iteration, in which development of separated flow and recirculation was to have begun, proved unstable. A plausible explanation for the unstable behavior of the third iterate was found. On that basis, alternate equations were developed that may permit stable iteration.

Book Description
The development of efficient iterative solution methods for the numerical solution of two- and three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations is discussed. Iterative time marching methods have several advantages over classical multi-step explicit time marching schemes, and non-iterative implicit time marching schemes. Iterative schemes have better stability characteristics than non-iterative explicit and implicit schemes. In this work, another approach based on the classical conjugate gradient method, known as the Generalized Minimum Residual (GMRES) algorithm is investigated. The GMRES algorithm has been used in the past by a number of researchers for solving steady viscous and inviscid flow problems. Here, we investigate the suitability of this algorithm for solving the system of non-linear equations that arise in unsteady Navier-Stokes solvers at each time step. Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical theory of compressible flow, describing both inviscid and viscous compressible flow, which are governed by the Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations respectively. The method of presentation allows readers with different backgrounds to focus on various modules of the material, either in part or more fully. Chapters include detailed heuristic arguments providing motivation for technical aspects that are rigorously presented later on in the text; for instance, the existence theory for steady and unsteady Navier-Stokes equations of isentropic compressible flow, and two-by-two systems of Euler equations in one space dimension. These parts are presented in a textbook style with auxiliary material in supporting sections and appendices. The book includes a rich index and extensive bibliography, thus allowing for quick orientation among the vast collection of literature on the mathematical theory of compressible flow, as well as in the book itself.

Book Description
The recently derived particular integrals of the Prandtl-Busemann iteration equations make possible the extension of the familiar source-siink concept to the solution of the higher-order iteration equations for the subsonic potential flow over thin symmetric two-dimensional profiles. An explicity expression is derived for the second-order velocity potential and velocity components and a method for obtaining the higher-order terms is indicated. The velocity at the surface of the Kaplan bump is evaluated to illustrate the method.
