Maintenance Architecture
Author: Hilary Sample
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262034972
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 205
Book Description
An inventive examination of a crucial but neglected aspect of architecture, by an architect writing to architects. Maintenance plays a crucial role in the production and endurance of architecture, yet architects for the most part treat maintenance with indifference. The discipline of architecture values the image of the new over the lived-in, the photogenic empty and stark building over a messy and labored one. But the fact is: homes need to be cleaned and buildings and cities need to be maintained, and architecture no matter its form cannot escape from such realities. In Maintenance Architecture, Hilary Sample offers an inventive examination of the architectural significance of maintenance through a series of short texts and images about specific buildings, materials, and projects. Although architects have seldom choose to represent maintenance—imagining their work only from conception to realization—artists have long explored subjects of endurance and permanence in iconic architecture. Sample explores a range of art projects—by artists including Gordon Matta-Clark, Jeff Wall, and Mierle Laderman Ukeles—to recast the problem of maintenance for architecture. How might architectural design and discourse change as a building cycle expands to include “post-occupancy”? Sample looks particularly at the private home, exhibition pavilion, and high-rise urban building, giving special attention to buildings constructed with novel and developing materials, technologies, and precise detailing in relation to endurance. These include Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House (1929), the Lever House (1952), the U.S. Steel Building (1971), and the O-14 (2010). She considers the iconography of skyscrapers; maintenance workforces, both public and private; labor-saving technology and devices; and contemporary architectural projects and preservation techniques that encompass the afterlife of buildings. A selection of artworks make the usually invisible aspects of maintenance visible, from Martha Rosler's Cleaning the Drapes to Inigo Manglano-Ovalle's The Kiss.

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
It is dedicated to an individual who had a very positive impact on my professional life. The book begins with describing a childhood that began during WWII in extreme poverty and then at the age of 12 immigrating to the US. Became a US citizen and joined the US Navy at 18 and became a Navy Hospital Corpsman (medic). After going to medical X- ray school and working at two US Navy hospitals was transferred to the US Naval Air Facility on the island of Sicily in Italy. Following two tours at Sigonella took a discharge and accepted a civilian position. Shortly after accepting the civilian position a US Navy CDR by the name of Toby Haynsworth took over the Supply Department. Toby had a discussion with me and expressed his concern about my temporary employment status and arranged for me to receive some specialized transportation training and for me to apply for permanent civil service status which I acquired giving me job security. Toby was also a good friend with an American writer who was living in Taormina, Sicily, Eugene Mc Donald Bonner. Mr. Bonner was a North Carolina born-author, composer, music critic, and wayfarer. He also wrote a very interesting book “Roundabout Sicily” describing in detail the history and beauty of this historic island. In addition to publishing a number of songs and chamber works, Mr. Bonner also collaborated with Anatole France to create and opera based upon the Frenchman’s comedy “The Man Who Married a Mute” (“Celui Qui Epousa Un Femme Muette”). It was a pleasure meeting and spending time with such an interesting and talented individual.

The Architect
Author: James Moore
Publisher: Crown
ISBN: 0307352641
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
President George W. Bush dubbed Karl Rove “The Architect” for his skill in creating an unprecedented campaign and fund-raising machine. But Rove’s ambitions have always been far more sweeping—to build a right-wing dynasty that can dominate American politics for decades. Rove’s master plan imagines a political system so controlled by Republicans that it is resisted only by symbolic opposition. In The Architect, James Moore and Wayne Slater, the bestselling authors of Bush’s Brain, return with an even more penetrating examination of Rove, his sweeping agenda, and the price he may have to pay for his audacity. Drawing on their decades-long study of Rove, they provide a rarely seen view of the politics of absolute power in Washington—how it is acquired, expanded, and turned to startling ends. Specifically, they unveil how Rove: • Used lobbyist Jack Abramoff as a cat’s-paw to manage unruly legislators • Energetically led the antigay marriage movement while protecting a family secret that made his stance bizarrely cynical • Turned Christian churches into a gigantic vote delivery system, despite privately admitting to being a nonbeliever • Repeatedly leaked information to harm political opponents, making him the man investigators most wanted to talk to when they began probing the Plame affair • Was intimately involved in an international disinformation scheme to lead America to war The Architect is an eye-opening and frequently shocking report on the maneuverings of a brilliant but morally ambiguous political strategist, and the first-ever in-depth look at a political operative striving to absolutely control the future—even if he risks losing everything. Also available as an eBook
