"Foqué establishes a general design theory based on the axioms of pragmatic thinking, a crucial unity between experience and the process of learning, and between conceptual thought and situational consciousness. Building Knowledge develops a theoretical framework and practical instrumentation to establish a knowledge base for the discipline of architecture. Part one of the book presents design methods as a third way of investigating reality apart from scientific methods or the conception of art. "'Speaking of People: Ebony, Jet and Contemporary Art' explores the ways contemporary artists use 'Ebony' and 'Jet' as a resource and as inspiration in their practices. Published by Johnson Publishing Company for over sixty years, both magazines are cultural touchstones for many African Americans and often represent a commonality between people of diverse backgrounds. Considering 'Ebony' and 'Jet' from a variety of perspectives -- as journalistic material and important documenters of Black life, as metaphor for African-American culture and as theoretical spaces for Black thought and exchange -- the exhibition examines the magazines’ material and cultural legacy as artists perceive them. While much of the work in the exhibition utilizes 'Ebony' and 'Jet' imagery and text as source material, for some, the concept of these iconic publications and their institutional histories provides the starting point for artistic production. As popular, widely-circulated print publications, the magazines ushered in a particular phenomenon of collection and display in Black domestic spaces. Somewhat analogously, many of the artists included in 'Speaking of People' maintain their own personal archives of these iconic publications. The first exhibition devoted to this topic, 'Speaking of People' features over thirty works by a multi-generational, interdisciplinary group of sixteen artists. 'Speaking of People' includes photography, painting, sculpture and sound works that will occupy the Museum’s Main galleries and Project Space. Even when an architectural drawing does not show any human figures, we can imagine many different characters just off the page: architects, artists, onlookers, clients, builders, developers, philanthropists—working, observing, admiring, arguing. In Stories from Architecture, Philippa Lewis captures some of these personalities through reminiscences, anecdotes, conversations, letters, and monologues that collectively offer the imagined histories of twenty-five architectural drawings. Some of these untold stories are factual, like Frank Lloyd Wright’s correspondence with a Wisconsin librarian regarding her $5,000 dream home, or letters written by the English architect John Nash to his irascible aristocratic client. Others recount a fictional, if credible, scenario by placing these drawings—and with them their characters—into their immediate social context. For instance, the dilemmas facing a Regency couple who are considering a move to a suburban villa; a request from the office of Richard Neutra for an assistant to measure Josef von Sternberg’s Rolls-Royce so that the director’s beloved vehicle might fit into the garage being designed by his architect; a teenager dreaming of a life away from parental supervision by gazing at a gadget-filled bachelor pad in Playboy magazine; even a policeman recording the ground plans of the house of a murder scene. In Making Dystopia, distinguished architectural historian James Stevens Curl tells the story of the advent of architectural Modernism in the aftermath of the First World War, its protagonists, and its astonishing, almost global acceptance after 1945. He argues forcefully that the triumph of architectural Modernism in the second half of the twentieth century led to massive destruction, the creation of alien urban landscapes, and a huge waste of resources. Moreover, the coming of Modernism was not an inevitable, seamless evolution, as many have insisted, but a massive, unparalled disruption that demanded a clean slate and the elimination of all ornament, decoration, and choice. Tracing the effects of the Modernist revolution in architecture to the present, Stevens Curl argues that, with each passing year, so-called 'iconic' architecture by supposed 'star' architects has become more and more bizarre, unsettling, and expensive, ignoring established contexts and proving to be stratospherically remote from the aspirations and needs of humanity.
