Ishodad of Merw (9th century), like other East Syrian exegetes, understands himself as an heir of Theodore of Mopsuestia's (died 428) approach to biblical interpretation. The study examines this claim in one of the rare cases where the Syriac translation of Theodore's commentary (on Ps 119 and 139-147) is extant. Ishodad emerges as a competent representative of his scholastic tradition working creatively with his scientific tools. Ishodad's commentary shows traces of Theodore's in less than a third of the verses explained. This reflects the development of medieval academic exegesis and the changed expectations towards biblical interpretation and its presentation. In its highly abbreviated style, Ishodad's commentary shows that it was written for a learned audience for whom one could reduce one's explanations to their essential parts. The study of Ishodad's commentary provides a glimpse into East-Syrian scholarship in Abbasid Mesopotamia as mediating between different exegetical traditions and biblical translations.

In 385 AH/AD 995 the Qāḍī ‘Abd al-Jabbār, well known for his Mu‘tazilī theological writings, wrote the Confirmation of the Proofs of Prophecy, a work that includes a creative polemic against Christianity. ‘Abd al-Jabbār reinterprets the Bible, Church history (especially the lives of Paul and Constantine) and Christian practice to argue that Christians changed the Islamic religion of Jesus. The present work begins with an examination of the controversial theory that this polemic was borrowed from an unkown Judaeo-Christian group. The author argues that ‘Abd al-Jabbār's polemic is better understood as a response to his particular milieu and the on-going inter-religious debates of the medieval Islamic world. This book, originally written in the Aramaic language was translated in the spring of 1964 by His Holiness, Mar Eshai Shimun XXIII, Catholicos Patriarch of the Church of the East. This work was little known since the original printed copies were mostly destroyed. The Canonical Approach makes a detailed assessment of Brevard Childs' 'canonical approach' to biblical interpretation. A careful analysis of Childs' work identifies a number of historical, hermeneutical, and theological issues that are central both to Childs' programme and to the wider methodological debate. These include the adequacy of the historical-critical tools, their relationship to the more recent, 'synchronic' approaches, the role of the interpreter's own presuppositions, the viability of working from a specific faith-commitment, and ways in which the ancient texts can 'speak' to the modern Church.
