Pyretics and Antipyretics
Author: A. S. Milton
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642685692
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 706
Book Description
Fever has always been recognised as the major sign of infectious disease as well as being associated with other illnesses. The suggestion of publishing a volume dedicated exclusively to the subject of fever in the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology series was one that greatly appealed to me, and I felt very honoured when I was invited to edit it. The first ideas about this volume were conceived in the latter part of 1977 and by the middle of 1978 the first authors had been approached. As is usual with such publications, by the time the first manuscripts were beginning to arrive in the late spring of 1979 there were still a few chapters for which authors had not yet been found. Finally by the end of 1981 the volume was complete. Because of the span of time over which the chapters were written, some refer to more recent work than others; however, I do not feel that this detracts from the overall contribution of all the chapters.

ISBN: 1483216780
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 602
Book Description
Psychoendocrinology covers the advances in the field of biology and the development of highly refined measurement techniques for hormones. The text describes the effects of sexual behavior on gonadal function in rodents; the hormonal regulation of learning performance; and the hormonal modulation of memory. The psychobiological perspective on the psychoneuroendocrinology of stress and the behavioral effects of the endogenous opioids are also considered. The book further tackles the hormonal interactions on temperature regulation and temperature regulation under modified physiological states. Endocrinologists, psychobiologists, neurologists, neurobiologists, and students taking related courses will find the book useful.

On the Fringes of Power
Author: Mari Grana
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1442247363
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
Touted in his time as one of the “great men of the West,” Stephen Wallace Dorsey was a Reconstruction carpetbagger who went to Arkansas and finagled and bribed his way into getting elected to the US Senate after living only two years in the state before heading West to seek his fortune. From a fraudulent New Mexico land claim to taking up mining claims and real estate in Southern California, he used sheer cunning and guile to manipulate the system of the Gilded Age to his own ends. Dorsey was a major presence in early New Mexico—which was no-holds-barred frontier corruption—with his flair for excess. Excess is in everything he did, his manipulative 600,000-acre-land-grab, his political shenanigans, his excessive drinking, his extravagant lifestyle always on display. In his fraudulent dealings he was caught out—not by the law, but those more conniving than he was. His fantastic mansion in the middle of a still-today empty prairie in northeastern New Mexico was of state-wide historical importance before the state could no longer afford to keep it.
