Book Description
"Irish Memories" is a compilation of excerpts and descriptions of Irish life during the early 1900s. Written by Edith Somerville and Violet Florence Martin but published under the name Martin Ross, these two women managed to create a literary text that immerses its readers in the rich and magical culture of Ireland. Recounting the life and times of citizens during the ups and downs of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, modern readers will find themselves engrossed and unable to put the book down until it's finished.

Book Description
Excerpt from Irish Recollections I was born in the City of Cork, a city sur rounded by some Of the most picturesque, poetic, and delightful regions to be found anywhere throughout the island. It is divided by the River Lee, and the Lee itself passes down through a district ornamented by beautiful, although not lofty hills and through exquisite plains, rich meadows, and delightful gardens, then streams through the city, and at last pours itself into the harbour of Queenstown, called in my early days the Cove of Cork, or more commonly by the abbreviated name of Cove, into the open sea. The home which I remember best in Cork was made up of a small house with a garden running down to the edge of the river, and when one had closed the gate behind him he seemed to be removed entirely from the commonplace working day world of business and traffic. He was stand ing at one end of a pretty garden with its little meadow, its fruit trees, and its abundant flowers, and just beneath him flowed the River Lee, there a narrow, rushing stream along whose opposite bank were meadows and trees, and in the farther background gently sloping hills. Contains letters 5-17 in which Charlotte Tonna gives a vivid account of her time in Ireland, of the violent activities of the Rockite movement in the mid-1820s in Kilkenny-Tipperary, and of the apocalyptic ultra-Evangelical 'siege mentality' during the Tithe War and the run-up to Catholic Emancipation. -- Publisher description.
