Book Description
A sweeping chronicle of Jewish life in the Tar Heel State from colonial times to the present, this beautifully illustrated volume incorporates oral histories, original historical documents, and profiles of fascinating individuals. The first comprehensive social history of its kind, Down Home demonstrates that the story of North Carolina Jews is attuned to the national story of immigrant acculturation but has a southern twist. Keeping in mind the larger southern, American, and Jewish contexts, Leonard Rogoff considers how the North Carolina Jewish experience differs from that of Jews in other southern states. He explores how Jews very often settled in North Carolina's small towns, rather than in its large cities, and he documents the reach and vitality of Jewish North Carolinians' participation in building the New South and the Sunbelt. Many North Carolina Jews were among those at the forefront of a changing South, Rogoff argues, and their experiences challenge stereotypes of a society that was agrarian and Protestant. More than 125 historic and contemporary photographs complement Rogoff's engaging epic, providing a visual panorama of Jewish social, cultural, economic, and religious life in North Carolina. This volume is a treasure to share and to keep. Published in association with the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, Down Home is part of a larger documentary project of the same name that will include a film and a traveling museum exhibition, to be launched in June 2010.

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to share the history of the Union Grove Old-time Fiddlers Convention with descendants of Henry Price (H.P.) & Ada Casey Van Hoy. I have no plans to publish or profit from the book and have made attempts to identify all sources of the assembled data. My research resulted in an outcome that was different than I had initially expected - - some background data is included to help explain why. My grandfather Henry Price (H.P.) Van Hoy attended what is now Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. H. P. strongly believed education was "the way" for local children to climb out of the depths of a depressed economy that was very difficult on people living in rural north Iredell County. Shortly before his first Union Grove Fiddlers Convention in 1924, H.P., who began teaching school at the age of 17, resigned his job as teacher and principal at Union Grove School to accept a position as county treasurer and tax collector.

Book Description
It was a hot afternoon in August 1856 when people in southern Iredell County, North Carolina, gathered for a special event. The train was on its way, bringing officials, a brass band, and the economic future. John Franklin Moore viewed the railroad tracks as an opportunity to fulfill his dream of starting a community and building a town. He knew that trains would bring customers and new citizens and carry freight to and from markets. Moore took a bold step by providing land for a depot and siding and offering land for homes and businesses. Moores Siding prospered and grew, and in 1873, the village was incorporated and named Mooresville to honor the founder. Generations of Mooresville citizens have taken daring steps into the future, building a community that is more than just a placeits a home. This is a story of Mooresville, the Queen of Iredell.
