Book Description
Still under the effects of heavy anesthesia after heart surgery, the occurrence of the 1858 drowning of an ancestor in the Brazos Rivers overtakes the mind of the patient. Upon awakening, the experience of the drowning, exactly one hundred and fifty years to the day in the past constantly stays with him. Soon one coincidence after another weaves the present into the past and an incident leads him on a journey back in time to Prussia and the events and circumstances that bring his ancestors to Austin County Texas in the mid 1840s. The Journey takes the family with roots back to the 1500s in Prussia, and a middle class existence to the extreme hardships of the sea voyage with the unbelievable crowded conditions in steerage, enduring storms, sickness and hunger to the point of starvation until finally landing in Galveston. Then they face the grueling and tiresome overland travel to their destination. With all the money spent for the sea voyage and overland travel, the family is relegated to tenant farming and slowing regains their fortunes and dignity to buy land after three years. As life unfolds, the family grows its Texas roots and expands their influence and land. Then the tragedy of the two younger brothers drowning while crossing Los Brazos de Dios (The Arms of God) river hauling cotton to Houston devastates the family and presents the necessity of the family cemetery for the first two burials. Suddenly the past and the present again collide leaving a sense that there is a force that flows through time like a river that flows continuously without end, and where we are today is only where we stepped out of the river.

Cat's Masquerade
Author: Thea Girard Marshall
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 146283678X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
Cats Masquerade War! The rights of women! The growing gap between the rich and the poor! Sound familiar? All of this was happening in the year 1803, when Caitlyn Llewellyn, only child and heiress to a large fortune, ran away, disguised as a maid, from her arranged marriage to her fathers old friend, the Earl of Falconbridge, to find love and a marriage of her own choosing during Londons Season. Caitlyns plan to run away to London and her Aunt Henrietta goes awry immediately. Caitlyn anticipated a lighthearted acceptance of her own unmasking, but she quickly realizes that her employer, the rich and beautiful young Clarissa Thomas, would not welcome a rival. The exposure of Cats masquerade as the ladys maid Cat Griffyn would imperil Caitlyns plan of having a Season. When Cat arrives in London, she finds that her aunt will not arrive for several weeks, obliging Cat to continue as a servant. Cat finds herself in danger from another source, the rich and mysterious Vere Courtenay Fairfax. When he first meets her upon the road to London, in her guise as a ladys maid, he is immediately taken by her beauty and resolves to follow her to London. After their first meeting, he seeks to hide the deep and powerful currents of his sensual desire behind a mien of disinterested and proper etiquette, but Cat is not deceived. Fairfax is never far from Cat as she goes about her days as Clarissas maid. A perfect correctness marks the manner of Lucien Montclair, the Comte du Foix, who also notices Cat during her service to Clarissa Thomas. He is a French migr. His charm and lightness of manner in the face of the tragedy of the French Revolution touch Cat, and she is enchanted by his kindness. Not so charming is the Thomases skulking footman, Roberts, whose desire to exact revenge on Cat puts everyone in danger. With the assistance of Lady Bullstrode, a bustling busybody, Cat escapes scandal and enters the glittering world of London Society. Sponsored by her Aunt Henrietta and aided by Lady Bullstrode, Cat scales the heights of the fashionable world. There she meets Mr. Fairfax and the Comte again. Against her will, she is drawn to Mr. Fairfax, whose passion has ignited her own. She is relieved when her father confesses by letter that her arranged bridegroom was not the old Lord Falconbridge, but his son, the Count of Montferrato. The new Earl of Falconbridge begins a correspondence with Cat, who hopes to find the answer to her passionate longings for Mr. Fairfax in marriage to the Earl of Falconbridge, whose letters hint at a nature well matched to her own. The Duchess of Devonshires masquerade ball begins the shattering climax that will reveal the true faces of Caitlyn and her suitors in Cats Masquerade. The evocation of the London of 1803 in Cats Masquerade is replete with the historical personages of that time and their milieu. The rich historical tapestry through which the main fictional characters move, with its real people, sights, sounds, and places, comes alive through the prose and dialogue. The Duchess of Devonshire, Beau Brummell, the Prince of Wales, Gentleman Jackson, and Tom Cribb live again in this story, which takes the reader to all the highlights of the Season, from Presentation at Court, dancing at Almacks, and promenading in the Park to boxing at the Fives Court and bidding at Tattersalls. The sumptuous life of the upper classes, with its hidden shoals of danger, is recreated in vivid detail. There is something for everyone at Cats Masquerade: mystery, intrigue, passion, sexual awakening, coming of age, and danger, all woven in a fabric of horse racing, boxing, operas, balls, social ambition, and a love both forbidden and dangerous.

Friedrichsburg
Author: Friedrich Armand Strubberg
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 0292742916
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
Founded in 1846, Fredericksburg, Texas, was established by German noblemen who enticed thousands of their compatriots to flee their overcrowded homeland with the prospect of free land in a place that was portrayed as a new Garden of Eden. Few of the settlers, however, were prepared for the harsh realities of the Texas frontier or for confrontation with the Comanche Indians. In his 1867 novel Friedrichsburg, Friedrich Armand Strubberg, a.k.a. Dr. Schubbert, interwove his personal story with a fictional romance to capture the flavor of Fredericksburg, Texas, during its founding years when he served as the first colonial director. Now available in a contemporary translation, Friedrichsburg brings to life the little-known aspects of life among these determined but often ill-equipped settlers who sought to make the transition to a new home and community on the Texas frontier. Opening just as a peace treaty is being negotiated between the German newcomers and the Comanches, the novel describes the unlikely survival of these fledgling homesteads and provides evidence that support from the Delaware Indians, as well as the nearby Mormon community of Zodiac, was key to the Germans’ success. Along the way, Strubberg also depicts the laying of the cornerstone to the Vereinskirche, the blazing of an important new road to Austin, exciting hunting scenes, and an admirable spirit of cultural cohesion and determined resilience. In so doing, he resurrects a fascinating lost world.

LiGa
Author: Sanem Ozdural
Publisher: Elsewhen Press
ISBN: 1908168161
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 373
Book Description
Welcome. You are hereby invited to compete in a tournament of LifeGame™ Bridge ("LiGa™ Bridge"). LiGa™ Bridge is a tournament of duplicate individual bridge in which eight players gamble with, and for, a portion of their lives. Yes, it is possible to gamble with life! We have the technology. Life-gambling is enabled by a process we call "hand imprinting". The physical manifestation of this is a network of cranberry-hued lines on the palms of the players' left hands. These lines track the natural print of the palm and the effect is akin to a fortune-teller's hand map. For further information on LiGa™ technology, please review Appendix I. You will be gambling with a portion of your remaining life to win a portion of the other players' lives. To be precise, each player will wager one third of his/her remaining life per game, as measured by Life Points, to win one quarter of the total Life Points deposited by the losing four players. The losers' remaining lives will be shortened by one third. The tournament ends when one - or more - of the players reaches 100 Life Points. This is the point at which the age-related degeneration of the human body ceases completely, irreversibly, and indefinitely. A somewhat misleading term that is applied to this state is 'immortality'. Reaching 100 Life Points does not mean you cannot be killed, only that you will not age. In other words, immortal does not mean invincible. During the tournament - after the first transfer of Life Points has taken place - your body will be in a constant state of flux as it adjusts to markedly increased or decreased rates of degeneration on a weekly basis. For detailed information on the impact of life-absorption on your body, please see Appendix II. If you wish to enter the tournament you must submit a non-refundable entrance fee of $10,000,000.00. Xavier Redd (Imm.) Have YOU had your invitation yet? Literary science fiction, LiGa™ tells of a game in which the players are, literally, gambling with their lives. Sanem Ozdural's debut novel is set in a near-future where a secretive organisation has developed technology to transfer the regenerative power of a body's cells from one person to another, conferring extended or even indefinite life expectancy. As a means of controlling who benefits from the technology, access is obtained by winning a tournament of chess or bridge to which only a select few are invited. At its core, the game is a test of a person's integrity, ability and resilience. The fantastic nature of the game's technology is made all the more credible by the familiarity of the contemporary setting, giving the story a definite slipstream feel. Sanem's novel provides a fascinating insight into the motivation both of those characters who win and thus have the possibility of virtual immortality and of those who will effectively lose some of their life expectancy.

Czechs Won't Get Lost in the World, Let Alone in America
Author: Miloslav Rechcigl Jr.
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1546238905
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 638
Book Description
This book features a panorama of the lives of selected personalities, whose roots had origin in the Czech lands and who, in the US, reached extraordinary success and who, with their activities, substantially influenced the growth and development of their new homeland. It is a saga of plain, as well as powerful, people whose influence and importance often exceeded the borders of the US. A great portion of included individuals may be unknown to readers since it concerns persons whose Czech origin was usually not known. The book covers the total period from the times of the discovery of New World to the end of the twentieth century. During the selection, little concern was given to nationalistic or ethnographic criteria, the only prerequisite was that the respected individuals were either born on the territory of the Czech lands or were descendants of emigrants from the Czech lands. The image on the front cover is a portrait of Augustine Herman, Lord of Bohemia Manor, the first documented Czech immigrant in the United States. The portrait comes from his famous Map of Maryland and Virginia, dated 1670. The colorful story of his life would be unbelievable if made into a movie. Pioneer, merchant, explorer, surveyor, map maker, patriot, rebel, diplomat, and finally Lord! Read more about him in the book.
