More than one century after the initial discovery of superconductivity in mercury, there remain entire classes of materials whose superconducting mechanisms have yet to be elucidated. One major avenue through which experimentalists contribute in this research has been nding new examples of unconventional superconductors. A recent trend in this material search is to combine traditional material synthesis methods with novel sample manipulation techniques in pursuit of materials in novel geometries. For example, topotactic reduction has demonstrated impressive capabilities to modify oxygen stoichiometry and achieving extreme valence states of 3d transition metal ions in complex oxide systems. In this thesis, I will introduce the in nite-layer nickelates obtained using this method as a new family of 3d-transition-metal-based unconventional superconductors. I will show that this system is a local type-II superconductor with singlet pairing and nodal superconducting gap structure, whose upper critical eld generically violates the Pauli limit and whose super uid density is so low that the superconductivity might be phase coherence limited. I will further identify the importance of rare earth 4f moments in shaping the superconductivity. Overall, I hope to show that this new system presents an additional source of experimental insight into unconventional superconductivity.

The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in hydrated Na03̣CoO2·1.3H20 has lead to active research work on the material over the last year due to its similarities and possible insight into the high-T[sub]c copper oxide superconductors as well as the possibility of other rich physical phenomenon. In this thesis, experimental evidence is presented illustrating the existence and properties of a previously unknown non-superconducting phase of Na03̣CoO2·1.3H20. This evidence includes magnetic susceptibility and x-ray scattering studies which suggest that the appearance of this phase is not due to underhydration and that a superconducting state can be restored via annealing at temperatures above roughly 340 K. Furthermore, synchrotron x-ray scattering of the non-superconductor reveals a 3-c modulation which is clearly absent in the superconducting phase of the material as well as unexpected temperature dependence behavior in the associated Bragg peaks.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 2004 University of Miami Workshop on Unconventional Superconductivity. The workshop was the fourth in a series of successful meetings on High-T Superconductivity and C related topics, which took place at the James L. Knight Physics Building on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Florida, in January 1991, 1995, 1999, and 2004. The workshop consisted of two consecutive events: 1. NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on New Challenges in Superconductivity: Experimental Advances and Emerging Theories, held on January 11-14, 2004; 2. Symposium on Emerging Mechanisms for High Temperature Superconductivity (SEMHTS), held on January 15-16, 2004. It is hard to write a balanced preface to a volume like this one, yet at least we try to offer the reader a taste of what was happening in this workshop. There were close to a hundred scientists from around the world, albeit fewer Russians than we had originally hoped for. Nevertheless, the workshop was very lively and we trust that this is demonstrated in this volume. The workshop included high-quality presentations on state of the art works, yet a key issue, discussed by many, was how homogeneous the cuprates are. STM data, as well as other reports, showed that the cuprate superconductors (SC’s) studied were inhomogeneous, especially in the underdoped regime; while experiments, like ARPES and magnetoresistance have established the existence of a Fermi Surface (FS), at least above some doping level, in the cuprates.

The physics of unconventional superconductors has been studied for decades but is still not well understood. The present thesis consists of two parts, each intended to shed light on some aspects of this long-standing problem. In the first part, I discuss, based on the Hubbard model in the weak-coupling limit, how the repulsion between electrons gives rise to Cooper pairing. I present simple rules that connect the features of the band structure to those of the gap function, as well as detailed numerical results for various model systems. In the second part, I focus on symmetry constraints on light reflection; a precise understanding of this issue is essential for identifying broken symmetries in various unconventional superconductors from polar Kerr effect measurements. Using a Green's function approach, I prove that the Onsager symmetry of the nonlocal electromagnetic response function implies the absence of the polar Kerr effect in backscattering.

Over the past 35 years, research on unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion systems has evolved from the surprising observations of unprecedented superconducting properties in compounds that convention dictated should not superconduct at all to performing explorations of rich phase spaces in which the delicate interplay between competing ground states appears to support emergent superconducting states. Here, we review the current understanding of superconductivity in heavy-fermion compounds and identify a set of characteristics that is common to their unconventional superconducting states. Furthermore, these core properties are compared with those of other classes of unconventional superconductors such as the cuprates and iron-based superconductors. Finally, we speculate on the prospects for future research in this field and how new advances might contribute towards resolving the long-standing mystery of how unconventional superconductivity works.
