Book Description
The present study seeks to develop accurate methods for predicting the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of two-lobed conical parawings with leading-edge booms for high aspect ratios and high slackness. For prediction purposes, the assumption was made that the booms and canopy can be considered separately. The canopy was then considered to have a known shape for purposes of determining its aerodynamic performance. Various theoretical methods were studied for determining canopy aerodynamic characteristics, including profile drag, Force increments due to the leading-edge booms were studied both analytically and empirically.

Review of Methods for Predicting the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Parawings
Author: M. R. Mendenhall
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Airplanes
Languages : en
Pages : 12
Book Description
A review is made of methods for pedicting the aerodynamic characteristics of one- and two-lobed conical parawings, cylindrical parawings, and all-flexible parawings. These methods are concerned primarily with the low-speed characteristics of conical two-lobed parawings. Methods are reviewed, and compared for predicting canopy shape and parawing lift, drag, and pitching moment. A discussion is given of the effects of leading-edge booms on the aerodynamic characteristics. Comparison is made between experiment and prediction for flexible parawings and rigid wings of parawing shape.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of the Effects of Camber and Twist on the Aerodynamic Characteristics of Parawings Having Normal Aspect Ratios of 3 and 6
Author: Edward Charles Polhamus
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aerodynamics
Languages : en
Pages : 48
Book Description
Low-speed wind-tunnel studies were made of the effects of camber and twist and the effects of aspect ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics of parawings. To determine the effects of camber and twist, tests were made both with the conventional conical-type canopy, which provides camber and washout, and with a cylindrical-type canopy which provides essentially zero camber and twist. With regard to aspect ratio, tests were made of parawings having aspect ratios of 3 and 6; the range was thereby extended well beyond that of previous investigations. The degree to which airfoil and wing theory can be used to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of parawings was also investigated.
